Day Date 40 price.

I’m currently waiting on two subs, a bluesy and black sub date from my new AD. It’s starting to feel like it’s not going to happen so this might be moot, but assuming it does before the new year, I plan on buying a DD 40 YG with white Romans in 2025.

I don’t want to buy grey but I’ve always heard that PM watches like the DD can be had sometimes significantly at discount at grey dealers and even in the past at ADs. What prices would you expect for this configuration? Do you think a discount at an AD is possible? I’m basically set on buying from an AD but I am curious since it’s a lot of money (for me at least). Don’t care about it holding value as I never sell my watches but obviously paying less is better.

It seems like the market in general has cooled off tremendously even for steel tool watches and I know PM are almost always harder to move. Thoughts?

For that configuration, you are looking at ~ 40k to spend at an AD. Don't put your hopes on a discount, but it won’t hurt to ask.

I only buy directly from Rolex. Grey market dealers open up watches and can swap parts out and for that reason I don’t trust them. I have the same comfiguration you want and it’s amazing. They shouldn’t be too hard to get.

Reputable grey dealers surely do not do that. Do you have concrete examples to refer to or are you just going on hearsay?

Yeah that’s rare. No well-seasoned grey dealer does that

Our Trusted Sellers are that because of the way they conduct business. No funny games or messing with the watches. They live by their reputations. I would find the watch through a Trusted Seller, negotiate a best price, pay and have the watch the next day by lunch. Go on with it and enjoy the watch instead of playing AD games.

I don't believe you'll get a discount from AD but it never hurts to ask

I called an AD down in PA with this configuration but in a 36, ready to sell. But she didn’t have any subs and I’d much prefer to stay local upstate vs a 5 hour drive. She was very hopeful I’d buy it.

I completely get it, it’s just not for me. I’m not playing any games. Basically, I’m going to wait the year I was originally told for the bluesy sub, and if it doesn’t happen I’m going to buy a couple speedies and next year I’ll get a gold Santos instead.

I have lots of watches on my ”list” but also a lot of other things I spend my money on outside watches (just ordered a new summer car and a hand engraved K80!) so my watch purchases are limited to some extent. If I can’t get the Rolexes I want I’ll be content with my old DJ and keep buying other brands. I’m very happy with the Cartier and Omegas I already own.

Check out the used prices, many DD are below retail. Buying from an AD should increase your odds of getting whatever else you want that AD so a little more may be worth to you.

See above. If you switch the order of your purchases you'll likely get all your watches faster. Buying the DD 40 YG from your AD (assuming they can get you one) will almost definitely (would in the places I shop) result in you getting offered at least one of your desired Subs in pretty short order.

Even if the PM model is a little more at the AD it certainly solidifies you as a solid client of the AD (they know you can get it cheaper going grey) and will help you with them for all future purchases in the long run. (This all presupposes that you are going to buy the DD b/c you really want it & not just to build a relationship.)

Tell them you want the dd with the sub at the same time. This is likely to be more effective than asking for a discount.

Buy the DD from your AD and should help you with steel pieces / towards your spend. I don't see you saving a significant amount on the day date unless you are buying pre owned via grey. Brand new will be about the same. Maybe slightly less but it's way worth paying a little more for the spend history at your AD, and it'll be in your name.

I never trust grey that they would be legit. Even if it is legit, which it most likely is, I would always have a small doubt.

I wouldn’t say all trusted dealers here are saints nor putting all my trusts on them. But buy DD first and Sub will come much faster. Also, buying from AD give you that honor feeling of being the first to own with your name on it

They do remove links to sell separately. They all do. So if buy grey, be careful to ask.

I definitely see the point in buying the DD first from my AD. One of the subs is a gift hence the purchase timeline (missed the birthday already) and I try to limit my toy/fun purchases per year as a matter of principle. I’m sticking to sub>DD and I’ll just hope he comes through or it’s a speedy or SM for Christmas instead.

My AD seems like a good dude and he’s reassured me he’s trying and will make it happen. He even gave me a slight deal (unasked for) on both a watch and a piece of jewelry I bought from him. Given that there’s only 1 AD within 4ish hours of here, I think there’s just a lot of people waiting for watches in my area.

It sounds like wasting time for no reason to inquire on the dd when you just said it’s a 2025 potential purchase.

Why not just buy a full gold sub? It sounds like you are open to a lot of options, nothing beats a full yellow gold sub.

Sure, nothing beats a yellow gold sub if you want to put a sticker on your forehead with "I am obnoxious, and please rob me" every time you wear it.

No. She asked what watches I was interested in from the brand, and I told her. I called to ask about the subs specifically.

The OP is interested in a yellow gold day date, how is the sub that much different?

I have purchased from a well known online grey dealer. All of us know this dealer. When buying from grey dealers you have to read the fine prints about wrist size. They will specify that the watch fits a certain wrist size but often times that size is smaller than the full links that you get from the AD when purchase new. I cross reference all their watches and they all indicated the same wrist size. It is unlikely that all the watches they take in are missing links. All I am saying is, when buying from grey, even the reputable ones, you need to do your due diligence. Just read the fine prints.

I agree that this does happen but to state that all grey dealers remove links and sell them separately is absolute rubbish.

How could you possibly, positively guarantee, that to be true?

Trust?.....In today's watch market?
