My first Rolex, and a note of thanks

Hello all,

My first post as a first-time Rolex owner, and I wanted to start with a note of thanks.

I knew little about Rolex (other than that I wanted one) when I started out so this forum was a fantastic resource – you’re all extremely generous with your knowledge and experience.

Secondly, my experience buying a Rolex – I’d love to know if this is typical.

The Rolex was a ‘reward’ to myself for completing a mid-career MBA (I’d promised myself a Longines if I could finish, perhaps a lower end Breitling or equivalent if I could bag a ‘distinction’, and a Rolex if I could finish first in class. So, a Rolex it was).

The experience at my nearest AD in the southeast of England was very positive: extremely courteous during my ‘walk in’ visit, willing to take my details, and frank in that my first choice watch (an OP with a green face – 41mm dial) would probably take three to four years.

A few weeks later I was walking past the same AD. Looking in the window, a lot of the watches had ‘exhibition only’ stickers. But a rather nice DateJust (41mm, Azurro blue face with roman numerals, jubillee bracelet) didn’t. Surely it couldn’t hurt to ask?
45 minutes later I left with the watch on my wrist, a silly grin on my face, and my 8-year-old daughter asking a little too loudly for comfort in a crowded street if ‘Daddy was happy with his new Rolex. It’s really shiny!”.

The SA’s take on matters was that the Rolex market is returning to something like normality, with the Covid spike and supply issues now easing.

Again, my question: does this square with the experience of others or was I fortunate to find a lower-demand Rolex appealing?

Congratulations on both your MBA and the DJ41.

Your experience proves that once in a while you strike lucky. Only the AD knows the full story.

Maybe the DJ had been offered to one or possibly more people on their list and all had declined. You just happened to walk by on the right day.

Alternatively, perhaps they just liked what you’d said on first visit and the watch was either just arrived or had done its duty of being on display.

Either way enjoy your new watch

On my last visit to an AD (not one I have actually bought from yet) there was a guy came in after me and had his day made by them selling him a DJ36. I only heard the SA say “it’s your lucky day” as he presented the watch.

Congratulations on a superb pick up. Sometimes it just falls in the right direction.

Difficult to say how fortunate you were or how your experience fits any trend, although the consensus is that we are past the madness and there is less demand. Like inflation, less doesn't mean none, it's just not bonkers any more.

Big congrats. So funny, I got the same exact reference to celebrate completion of my MBA as well four years ago.

This must be the “MBA watch” lol. I’m biased of course, but I think it is the most beautiful datejust configuration.

You happened to NAB a Rolex that's been on my radar for a few years now. You didn't say whether it had a fluted or smooth bezel but in either case you've got a very nice rolex one that I would love to have. congratulations.

Huge congratulations on your MBA, mate brilliant! Congrats on your first Rolex.

Don't know the ADs in the UK? But many on TRF do. So I would say you were at the right place at the right time! Good for you! I’m happy that you had a positive AD experience.
That is one of the best looking DJ in my opinion.

Enjoy it and wear it in good health.

Cheers!

What a great story and accomplishment !

How fortunate you were really depends on that bezel. If it’s fluted, big score as they are more in demand and less likely walk in available.

If not, still not common to see a blue dial DJ available, so a score nonetheless.

Congrats!

Morning folks - Again, these warm words of welcome are hugely appreciated. Many thanks.

On the question of the bezel, it's the smooth version rather than the fluted variety.

Nice choice and the dial is amazing.

I like the smooth bezel.
