Tudor BB58 waiting list - deposit required?

I went into a local Fraser Hart today to put my name down on their waiting list for a BB58. A 10% deposit was required up front - is that normal practice?

Yes. I put one down, waited 4 months, and eventually retracted it and went to a grey dealer. Some dealers won’t even take deposits (Ie, don’t let you put name down at all).

I'd actually want to leave a deposit, personally. At a lot of ADs, "waiting lists" are just another way of telling you that you're never getting the watch -- there will always be a regular customer, big spender, or someone buying a package deal who gets the watches before they reach anyone on a list (if a list is actually kept at all). If they're taking your money, that's (in theory) an acknowledgement of a genuine effort to get you the watch when your time comes. It's also a way for you to show them that you're serious about purchasing from them, and not just throwing your name on a "list" at every AD within 300 miles.

This all presupposes the standard fully-refundable deposit, of course. Obviously, never leave a non-refundable deposit unless there's an actual contract to receive the watch by a certain date.

Personally , I wouldn't leave a deposit -

But I can understand a small deposit [ 10 % ] to differentiate Casual shoppers from Serious buyers

When In Europe I see this quite often in the AD case, and on bracelet no less

It seems to be one of these that suffer from geographical placement syndrome

I do like it

Amen to that!

I bought my 58 from them. They got me the watch after less than 2 months when it was super hot. Since you leave a deposit they won’t play with you - while others would very willingly. I’d recommend them!

This watch is becoming more available. I wanted one and put my name down in Goldsmiths on a recent trip to the UK, 5 days later they offered one a strap which I declined.
Beaverbrook's wanted some deposit of which I think was 20% but cant remember for sure but I declined. Here in Spain they are now showing up at AD in strap and NATO. Hang on there as in not too long I believe the supply is increasing steadily.

This. Harder to come by in the US, but without trying stumbles upon one in Switzerland on bracelet.

I’d be fine with leaving a deposit.

Was in Goldsmiths in Reading yesterday morning dropping off my GMT for service. They had 2 BB58 in the window. One on strap and other on Nato. While I was taking care of my business a customer on the table next to me was trying them on but eventually passed on both of them as he want bracelet version.

After I finished my stuff I couldn't help asking to try them on myself. Temptation was too strong, I bought the leather strap one. Left £200 deposit and will collect sometime next week.

If you don't like it you could always buy an Omega. No waiting and possibly a discount.

A deposit differentiates the serious buyer from the tyre kickers.
Perfectly OK

Agree.
A healthy deposit would get half the dreamers off lists

AP is 25% and on a higher price, so 10% on a Tudor wouldn't hurt anyone, especially if it means a list actually exists.

The Tudor BB58 and GMT list is artificial. They are now sitting in windows. The UK is a bit tight but not a biggie.
