In the Wild

This week was very busy for me, flying all around the country.

In Austin, I met a great group at Army Futures Command, where I met a Colonel that was wearing a GMT BLRO jubilee - looked great on him. I commented at the end of the brief on his Pepsi, which led to 5-6 mins geeking out on Rolex.

Then in Houston, while riding the rental car trolley to the airport, a couple in late thirties got on with their young child in a stroller. He was wearing an SD43, which I noticed but didn’t say anything until he complimented me on my Deep Blue. Great conversation.

Landed in Tampa and saw a guy wearing white dial Daytona 116520. Didn’t look great on him actually, which I think is just my feeling about that watch. I’ve seen the 500 black cerachrome version in the wild a couple months back while at Disney, and that one looked great!

Anyway, tell us what you’ve seen lately and how you thought it looked.

I know, didn’t happen without pics, but I don’t feel comfortable taken pics of other guys. But, at least here is my watch along for the trip!

Cool post, with all the hype about SS sports models its interesting to see people wearing them in the wild now that not just anybody can walk into an AD and acquire one. Saw a black dial Daytona at a local restaurant couple months back, a white dial Daytona at Hudson Yards in New York earlier in the year, and a BLNR on some guy at the gym. Those are the three I think of off the bat

Seen a JC and an E2 recently.

And a couple of young guys wearing a hulk and a new omega seamaster 300, both looked fake though

Sometimes, I am able to get away from work and take the wife out on date night at the strip. See many variations of DJs, older Submariners, and DDs. Mostly just pass by and quick glance. Haven’t had a random interaction with strangers.

Guy next to me at the counter in Full Moon BBQ tonight, in BHM, was wearing his 116713. Not that long ago it was an unsought-after reference. I bought one at a real discount a couple years back.

Looked good on him and I chose not to comment. It’s nice to see folks like us enjoying the watches as they are meant to be worn. His had plenty of scratches, propped up on the counter getting more scratches - and he was not disturbed. Lesson in that, for some of us WIS.

Dang, your D Blue looks good. Making it hard for me to refrain...

Saw a woman in the park wearing a white dial 116520 that looked awesome. Random guy walking on lexington wearing Richard Mille, don’t know enough about the models to be more specific. Man behind me at the 77 and lex subway station wearing black dial 116520.

For me, outside of the usual datejusts, recent sightings have been:

1. Hulk
2. RM 11
3. AP ROC
4. BLNR on oyster
5. Huge and gorgeous IWC IN rose gold

All have been in and around O’Hare

Interestingly, I have little to no sightings where I live. Not sure why tho.

However I did see a Pepsi on a recent trip to Monterey.

The last one that I saw was a dad wearing a JC Deep Sea during Parent Teacher Conferences.

At the end of the short meeting I said “nice watch by the way” and he replied “thank you, it’s the James Cameron one”

Was at a party last week and an older gentleman was wearing a Coke. We were outside and it was kind of dark, so I couldn't tell if it was a Coke or Pepsi. I asked him, and he didn't know what I was talking about.

Last month I took a two week Mediterranean cruise. On the ship was an older German man with a Hulk and his grown son wore a SubC.

I met another older couple from New Zealand — man had a two year old Bluesy and she wore an older TT Datejust.

My driver in Rome had the SeaDweller 43 — yes, my driver. We chatted and yes, it was real. I was wearing my ND Sub and wow, the SD43 is much larger. Very good looking on his wrist (he was a pretty big guy).

I was at The Who concert locally on Wednesday in a floor seat. Considering the generally older crowd lots of nice watches. Just in the adjacent seats near me I spotted a sub and four DJ's. A couple of lady DJ's as well.

Was staying at the Gaylord hotel in Dallas earlier in the year, wearing my 116710LN and spotted another at the gift shop. I got his attention and politely said, "nice watch, sir," and he didn't seem too thrilled to acknowledge me. Oh well.

Earlier in the week I was at a baseball game and saw another 116710LN, a DJ41 and a 5 digit GMT.

My favorite was two weeks ago at Omni Dallas - saw a black ceramic Daytona as I was walking out of the restaurant. I wanted to talk to the gentleman but I was afraid it would be like my previous experience, so I just admired, kept my mouth shut and walked out.

I see guys wearing Rolex's ALL the time. If you pay attention you actually see them everywhere.

Saw one on my morning coffee run to the local - guy was wearing a Hulk. Petrol station guy lining up to pay wearing a white dial explorer 2 and just then at the chemist a young guy wearing a TT Bluesy.

I just never say anything to them. Nothing like HK though every dick and harry has a Rolex on. LOL literally.

I posted this earlier but thought it was appropriate response here.

More than once I’ve had people sitting up front ask me about watches on flights. Once I was sitting next to a guy who had a vintage Daytona on. He was a friendly sort and we were talking on a long flight. I inquired about his watch after we had discussed his business, etc. He quickly took it off and handed it to me to inspect which surprised me. (I was wearing BLRO) and then proceeded to tell me the story behind it. His mother called his father at work to tell him she was going into labor and to meet her at the Hospital. He told me that his father was a working class, maintenance supervisor - not wealthy. But he had looked longingly at this Daytona at the local jeweler for a quite some time. As he was driving to the hospital, he decided to stop and purchase the watch as a memento in celebration of the birth of his child. Before his father passed away, he handed it down to his son. He allowed me to take a pic. Very cool.

One more story. I was sitting next to an older gentleman at a beautiful country club dinner party one evening. He shared with me the story of his life and how he had served in the Navy. I was also a Navy officer so we talked about our experiences in the service. I noticed his vintage Rolex and inquired about how he came to own it. He said when he graduated from High School his parents wanted him to have a nice watch to wear to college and out into the world, that would be with him for a long time and reflect his stature in life. Without my asking, he took the watch off and offered that I could take a pic with my iPhone if I wanted. He said he had it serviced a few times but had never worn another watch. But it was really amazing.

Saw a guy with a 116500 white at Starbucks a couple of weeks ago. Gotta admit it looked
great on the wrist although he looked like a bit of a tool.

Saw a PP 5712r on a woman's wrist in the shuttle to the aircraft at Bangkok airport a few months ago. Looked awesome!

Great stories. Its stories that have a back story that are really cool to me. Walking up to a complete stranger wanting to talk watches is not my MO at all. But having something in common and hearing their story is awesome. Great looking watches too.

I've seen a Kermit and 5 digit polar expl ii recently at the airport. And a modern DJ on jubilee + AP RO recently caught my eye on the plane when the gents were stowing their luggage (it's those blingy bracelets).

I saw an older gent wearing a gold sub-c at my local post office... That thing looked great. I'll snag one of those one day when I feel I can pull off a gold watch.

Zenith Daytona spotted at my son's soccer practice. And my 2 neighbors rock a 5 digit sub and GMT ii coke.

My landscaper wears a hulk.

Oh and almost forgot I saw a rose gold YM with the black bezel at my other son's toddler music class... Although I had a hard time telling if it was the genuine article or a homage of some sort.

Funny thing is I'm into sea dwellers in a big way and I don't think I've seen any in the wild aside from my own.

In La Jolla every other person wears a Rolex. But your post reminded me of my Army days where at meetings many of the people, officers and enlisted, wore Rolexes.

I met a nice gentlemen the other day at the cigar bar who was wearing a Paul Newman Daytona, and was courteous enough to let me wrist it for a little while. I also recently saw the DaytonaC on a friend at a local coffeehouse.

I live in a Wisconsin small town so the only one I've seen in the wild was a blue DJ41 worn by my doc. He and I chat about baseball and watches anytime I'm in there.
