Help, Smashed my cystal!

Ackkk, what a mess, I took my ladies datejust off and when I went to pick it up I accidently dropped it on the tile.

I smashed the crystal and I haven't had time to go to my AD yet, I turned the watch face down and pulled out the crown.

Anyone else had this happen? How musch do you think it will cost me to get it fixed? I think glass got in the date area and the broken glass wedged the dials stopped.

I am sooo upset, any advice would help.

But seriously, I'm sure Rolex will have no trouble repairing it, regardless of the damage and it will come back looking like brand new. Now as far as the cost, I have no idea, but it won't be cheap.

I'm sure it could be fixed, but it'll be costly.

I usually charge about $80, some AD's will do $100-150, and RSC will do it for $150 plus a 1-3 week turnaround.

I shattered the crystal on my Sub 2-3 months after I got it, I don't remember what it cost as this was 23 years ago. I was in college at the time at took it to the nearest AD for repair, they sent it to a RSC and I got it back several months later. Five or six years after that I had it serviced, as there wasn't a local AD, I took it to a highly recommended local watchmaker. When I picked it up he asked me if I'd ever broken the crystal, surprised he could tell, I told him yes and asked him how he knew, he said the inside of the case was full of shards of the crystal.

I was telling Bob Ridley about this last time I was at his shop, he told me you could train anyone to work on watches, but you couldn't instill the passion in them. I'm glad Bob is local to me!

Kaya,

You have to do a FULL service, as to avoid the risk to have fragments of glass in the gears. The watch has to be cleaned and checked in every little detail. Good Luck !

damn a lot of people are dropping their watches lately, I think you did the right thing by putting the watch face down and pulling the crown out. Should not be to much to get repaired, Good luck

X2

Do not just replace the crystal as if any glass shards are stuck inside it could cause some serious headaches down the road which will cost quite a bit more.

I am guessing you are looking at 600 +

$150 to change the crystal like what chenx said..but it might be cheaper because yours is a ladies datejust...was it plastic or crystal?? Dont worry they will clean all the broken glass...

Kaya, was this the lady DJ that had the diamond bezel? Did it pop off? If you send the watch in for service, be sure to send the original bezel in, too.... but you probably already knew this...

Is there a brittleness issue with the sapphire crystals? I've accidentally whacked my Citizen with a hammer more than once, without so much as a scratch. It's just a mineral glass crystal.

Obviously you're not hitting it hard enough Casey.

Sorry to hear about the damage Kaya.

Perhaps. I recognize that every "crystal" that is actually a crystalline structure has its fracture lines- even diamond will fracture- but it seems odd that such a short fall is enough to crack sapphire when such won't break glass.

My watch is essentially a Citizen copy of an Air King, so it's not as if it's overbuilt.

My 18 yr old Sd has had its crystal given several good whacks and even underwater. Nary a scratch or break. At recent service they said it was in serviceable shape, I told them to change it out anyway because it was 18 years old.

I learned my lesson recently. From now on, I never put on, or take off a watch unless over carpeting. Don't ask me how I know this.

Same thing happened to me. i later found out that tile floors are a sapphire crystal's worst enemy. I had my gmt ii fixed at the RSC in San Francisco. I paid 180 for the new crystal. I also had a full service done, which is highly recommended to get any crystal shards out of the movement -- they can enter through the date window. That was covered by warranty in my case, but if it isn't, you are looking at another 3 to 500 bucks.

I had a chip in my z serial explorer just couple of days ago. I went to the local ad and they replaced the whole crystal for $180. I guess i got robbed for $30 but i had my watch within 45 minutes of walking in. As long as the shattered crystal didn't enter the movement and was a clean crack, it shouldn't cost that much. If it did enter the movement, they might charge for a full service, which will run you $500 plus $150. I was a little skeptical when they brought back my watch because i found residue of a white paste substance on my watch. I thought they just buffed it out instead of replacing the whole thing. The crown coronet was still there instead of the lec s, which is proof of a replacement service crystal. Either way though, i walked in thinking i wouldn't see my rolex for a hot minute but walked out in an hour very excited! Hope this helps pal.
