Anyone pick the Sub ND over the Explorer (I)?
As some of you may know from previous posts, I have been jones'n for an Explorer for quite some time; however, the more I learn about them and look at them - I seem to be drawn to the 1016's rather than the newest model.
With this said, I have been looking at prices for LNIB and it seems more economical to get a Sub ND than an Explorer, and the added function of the bezel for lapsed time is a tremendous feature. I am curious if anyone narrowed to these two models and what decisions you made. Both are icons and gentlemen's tools. I am not looking for advice - just a discussion.

the explorer fit my wrist better. it's also more uncommon. i agree if they offered a 1016 style at about 3K that would be the optimal watch. i didn't think i needed a honkin' bezel all the time, as this is to be my only watch for all uses, including formal.

they both share the exact same movement - so it really boils down to aesthetics and perception.

Buy the watch that you like the most and don't be swayed by what others think/do. I bought a new Sub ND and thoroughly enjoy it. If you really want an Explorer 1016, then do the research find one and buy it. Remember you will be the one wearing it so get the one you enjoy!!!

Both are great watches, but I went for the simpler one: The explorer.

I was in the exact same situation!!! So I bought 1 of each!!!! Susequently sold the non date as I have the sub date and sea-dweller. Love the explorer, massively under-rated watch!!

I personally feel that they are different kind of watches, which fill different requirements.
If you wish a classic, low profile, all situations use watch, and don´t mind not having a date feature, go for the Explorer. This is a great underrated piece of horology. If you like a more flashy, sporty look, or if you are involved in water sports or diving, then the SD is the one. I had always loved the Submariner, and got two of them. Never paid attention to the SD. But now the SD is discontinued, I felt it would be interesting to have one in my collection of Rolex diving watches, and I bought one myself last week. I had to recognize that it is a great watch, a little heavier and little mor height than the Sub, but a very nice watch indeed. I love its inscriptions of the case back. Small but very nice detail. And the Explorer?? Well, I love that watch too!! I got one. I guess it is a very personal decision to choose one between the two models, if you can´t follow the path of fellow member Jay Kay... or me. My best suggestion would be to visit an AD, and try the two watches, have it on your wrist for some minutes each, repeat the change and see which one looks better in your wrist as per your own opinion, or which one you feel better, considering weight, size, use expected, etc. Good luck with your decision, and post a picture when you buy it! Kind regards, Abel

I thought for sure I was going to buy the white EXP II but something about the bezel turned me off. The white dial and date are special. But in the end I opted for the Sub LV because I loved the green and the ability of the watch to morph when the black bezel is added. In your decision, I would decide whether I liked the date or not. |
