Import Duty from Mauritius to UK
Please could someone give me an idea of how I pay or what I would pay to bring a Rolex back from Mauritius into the UK. The value is over 5k but understand the process of getting the duty back at the airport but ask whether I would not only pay duty but also VAT back in the UK?

Follow the link on that page to the 'VAT Helpline'. Their answer is the one I would trust. |

If you can recover the VAT you paid in Mauritius then the net cost won't be much (5% plus any fees)

Hi like most UK dealers lots of datejust etc and precious metal Rolex watches. No sports models to be found unfortunately.

Do they really bother you for buying one wrist watch ? It’s for personal use so I don’t see an issue .

Wear it on your wrist, don't declare it and if you are asked say that it is for personal use. That is what I would do. What you do is up to you. You might consider sending the box and papers separately so it is not obvious that you are wearing a brand new watch.
It is very unlikely that they will ask any questions. Perhaps your wife/father/mother/whoever purchased the watch for you last year, you have no idea where and you have no receipts... |

You have to pay VAT and probably duties as well. In your fellow EU country that adds up to nearly 30 percent.
Not declaring might get you a fine on top. Buying outside the EU makes no sense for us. You can always gamble

Why not tell him to steal the watch in the first place to save that money too. |

Whatever else you do, declare it!

He will get a fine and be liable to pay the VAT. @OP: You walk through the red channel to declare your VAT. |

Indeed, the sole reason why Customs and Excise exist is to collect taxes.

I am not recommending anything. I just said what I would do. Yes, I have broken the law. So have you. Driving faster than the posted speed limit is for example illegal. Did you ever forget to declare some gain you made to the tax man? Illegal too.
Walking through customs and begging them to rape me just goes against the grain. The OP is free to do what he likes. |

In my view it goes against the grain when people pick and choose the laws that they think should apply to them, then boast about it. |
