Why is the Yacht Master not as popular as the other sports models?
It truly baffles me why the current yacht master is not as popular some other models in the Rolex range. I personally think it’s a beautiful watch, specifically the version with the slate grey dial.

I like it too. Especially the rose gold on oyster flex.
The YM popularity threads normally distill down to two main points. Not as much history as a sub or gmt. Not quite a sports watch and not quite a professional watch so awkwardly placed on its own. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I have 2 “classics” Sub and Datejust plus an SD4K. Have to say my YM 9bluedial) to my taste anyway is the best looking, as well as being the most comfortable.

In general, the YMs are gorgeous watches - beautiful dial choices available.
Can only speak for myself, but to me the deal breaker is the bezel. Just don’t like the way platinum looks. Having said this, my next purchase next spring will be an YM, the 126655. Obviously, it has the ceramic bezel

Why is the Yacht Master not as popular as the other sports models?
Not popular in the SubTona forums yes. Like every other Rolex that isn’t a Daytona or a Submariner.
In the real world, all Rolex are selling just fine. |

This is like one of those Buddhist koans like what is the sound of one hand clapping. In other words, it is inscrutable.

I’ve always felt the blue dial 116622 was very underrated.

Cool piece, one of my watchbox favorites. A dressy sports watch for almost all occasions. Its refined appearance makes it look feminine to some and I wouldn't be surprised if this was the main reason for its lower popularity.

It isn't as popular because it is not as aesthetically pleasing or as likeable.
In everything that is based on popularity, somebody has to be the last kid picked for the team.

I love them, however decided to stick with ceramic bezel for long term wear

Price. Somebody who "wants a sport Rolex" would rather pay $8500 for a Sub Date than $12,000 for a YM. This of course when you could just walk in a buy a Sub, which is why the YM is getting harder to get now.

Not too many “Yachtsmen” around these days. Easier to imagine you are a diver or explorer.

Love this post. I do think “imagine” is the key tho. For most of us anyway.

Really like the model as a luxurious sub, only issue was maybe the bezel was too prominent.

I don’t think so. Doesn’t Submariner mean someone beneath the water. So snorkelling or diving with or without scuba gear count just as much. If not more, a sailor in a submarine wouldn’t need much water resistance (hopefully!). Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Price and recognition I'd say. The average schmuck doesn't care about history or aesthetic. They want the big numeric coloured Rolex bezel and a Cyclops. The Submariner does it cheaper and says 'Submariner' on it.

I'm guessing the lack of ceramic bezel hurts its popularity. I love the blue YM very much though.

I never liked the YM until I borrowed one from a friend and photographed it. I also wrote a small review of the watch. Very nice model and as you say it's underrated.
Here's my writeup of the YM: https://luxurywatches635.wordpress.c...ter-ref-16622/

I had the same question before, but after some discussion with my WIS friends, I came into these findings:
1) lack of ceramic bezel, or rather a much protruding bezel 2) the odd pairing of colors with the dials and sec needle (I personally think its ok) 3) not much history and recognition compared with the sub 4) higher priced before this whole shortage thing (weird enough its actually cheaper and more available than subs in ADs or greys where I came from) 5) more of a leisure watch connected with the branding of “Yacht Master” rather than a modest tool watch of “Submariner” IMO, its a great watch on its own account, regardless of what the masses thinks. |
