Now the locals can have their life back.
From everything I’ve read, the venue owners overplayed their hand and Rolex / Swatch suck all the oxygen from the show anyway. Even auto manufacturers are skipping auto shows. |

From what I've heard the Basel venue and location has become inconvenient, prohibitively expensive and frustrating....

As long as Rolex, Patek & a handful of others participate, the show will go on. Maybe Seiko got tired of their upstairs location, away from the action on the ground floor.

Has anyone here ever attended Baselworld? Is there any point for a watch enthusiast (rather than a journalist or AD)? I have been wondering whether that would be a fun trip or not.
All the brands starting their own events in different places and at different times obviously makes this harder. I can imagining traveling to a single event with many brands but likely wouldn’t go to a one brand event unless it’s close and convenient. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Finalizing the show dates to coincide with Japan's "Golden Week" is basically telling a Japanese company "We do not value your business as much as our other clients." Japanese business culture, like many Asian business cultures, see significance in even small gestures and this decision by Baselworld is a strongly negative gesture.

Sounds like hubris on the part of the organisers. I get the feeling the Swatch Group and Seiko won't be the last, but they are two pretty big names in the industry.

So they chose this time knowing about Golden Week. They are basically telling Seiko that compared to the other factors, the Japanese Golden Week factor is less important. |
