Help deciding

Hello all,

Just need some help making a decision on a watch for my wife.

I have been wearing a Rolex since before I even met my wife, and she has never expressed a ton of interest in it other than she thinks it’s a pretty watch.

She has never been much of one for wrist watches, but has recently expressed interest in an older ladies Rolex Date 6516. The fact that she never really expresses interest in them, and now has found one she likes I feel is significant and would really like to get one for her. I would rather get her a slightly newer reference, but she had expressed interest in this particular one more than others in the past.

The one that she showed me she likes I feel is slightly high on the price for what it is as it comes with no box paperwork or history. I looked around a little further for a similar one for a little better price, and ran into one.

The one I found is slightly different in the dial and bezel, but in my opinion seems to be a better deal overall as it comes with the box and paperwork. Interestingly enough, the paperwork puts the original purchase in Japan, where I actually met my wife.

My dilemma for the past couple of days, is just buy the one she likes? Or buy the one that seems like a better deal overall?

The watched I am referencing are below.

The one she likes

The one I feel is a better deal and slightly more unique due to the provenance, but different.

You all have any opinions or things I may not be taking into account? Having a rough time deciding this one.

So....your choice is buy your wife what she’s likes? Or buy her what you like?

I’ll go with the former.

Question: do you see her fixating on box and papers? Do you see her keeping it forever? Can you find her the one she likes with box and papers, good condition at a great price?

Obviously, pay a fair price, but remember: a happy wife, a happy life!

That’s kinda my thoughts as well. I go back and forth constantly as the watches are very similar, but overall, I think it’s me worried about the box and papers.

Thank you for the advice

There is no price difference right? Plus this “Lady Date” seems oddly to me

So nice of you, you're a good husband :-)
First be aware of authenticity, no papers these days could mean headache.
I would sit with her and work on it together. Search for the good safe deals available and then decide one one of them. Always get what she really wants.

My wife did a complete 180 once she saw them in person.

Don’t rush, but if she knows what she likes- buy her the one she picked out

Always buy what you want, meaning what she wants in this case

Also, personally I wouldn’t buy a vintage as a first. I’d be more inclined to go to an AD and let her pick something that’s Brand spanking new. You shouldn’t have any issue finding Datejusts in this size at an AD

I could not agree more. Very wise advice here.

Buy what she wants and just because it has “box and papers” doesn’t make it a better deal! Trust me, she will be happier to get what she really wants!

Thank you all for the responses. I really appreciate the input.

I’m trying to keep it relatively quiet rather than ask her as she is pretty modest when it comes to purchasing things like this. She would likely just tell me she changed her mind and doesn’t want a watch at all.

I definitely agree on the vintage versus modern aspect you all mentioned. I think a more modern piece in the end will be a much more livable watch to wear, especially with her only beginning to be into them and the intricacies of them off hand.

I found a very similar one that is a modern one but it’s on a jubilee bracelet rather than an oyster. I believe she likes the stainless oyster understated look of the ones above and that’s what’s beginning to draw her in. I know it’s an easy change later, but that kind of brings me back to the original question of what she really likes and chose versus what’s probably best.

Buy your wife what she likes or buy her what you think she should like better?
I’ll answer your question with a question........how long are you looking to stay married?

I would say take her along and have her look at everything and then get her favorite. For some reason when I tried to get a former girlfriend a watch, she was in love with a Hamilton above everything else.

Thank you all for those that responded. Ended up purchasing the original one she had mentioned, and could not be happier with it.

My wife loves it, but does wish it had the box and papers. I’ll probably track down the box and polishing cloth at the very least for her.

I know the 6516 series is not overly desirable overall, but after receiving hers, I must say the simplicity of it all is really very elegant in comparison to many modern variants, and I could not be happier to have purchased this particular one for my wife’s first Rolex.

Thanks again to all that had some input on it all.
