New “Hulk” Sub stopped! :-0

Hey all,

I got a call from my AD yesterday saying that they had just received a Hulk sub and I was at the top of the list. Great, right?

Picked it up and it was running when I left the AD, took it home showed my wife, got yelled at for buying another watch...still all good, right?

Got up this morning and it has stopped overnight. Took it into the AD and they were shocked. No one there had ever seen that happen before.

They were great and are sending it back to Rolex for investigation, but has this happened to anyone else early in their Rolex ownership?

Seems odd and not the “Rolex way”. That all said, maybe market pressure to make more popular models faster could up their defect rate.

Thoughts?

My first question would be was it fully wound up before you strapped it on? 40 turns of the crown.

Did you wind the watch with the crown, and how many hours had you worn it?

Like many are going to say, it sounds like it didn't get a full manual wind to charge the reserve; but surely your AD would have known to try this. It'll be interesting to see what Rolex says.

That’s gotta be disappointing. Aren’t QC issues strictly unique to Tudor according to a few on here

Good luck and hope you get it back sooner rather than later.

This may be off topic but I wish someone would explain to me why my 5513 will start running with two turns of the crown while my Exp II takes 20+ turns to get started. I don't think I ever needed to wind my 5513 or 1675 20+ turns to get started.

You gotta believe the AD was smart enough to wind.

Wow! That's pretty unusual for any watch, never mind Rolex. Maybe this watch had been dropped at some point as mechanical movements don't like severe shock or vibration. May have been sold to someone else and returned. Quite odd though since Rolex QA is super thorough with functional testing to meet the Superlative Chronometer designation. Hope you get it fixed quick. Cheers!

probably has something to do with your 24 hour hand, the movement may require more winding power to get started. Good question though, I need 20+ turns as well on my Explorer II

On a serious not, assuming you are serious, have you ever owned an automatic (mechanical) watch before? No? I thought not. You need to wind it fully before you even wear it. And then you need to be active enough for the rotor to turn and keep it wound.

I find it hard to believe the store would not have fully wound it before giving it to you.

Crazier things have happened. Seen new members show up here that didn't even know they had to manually wind their new watch for it to get up running.

AD did the wind up. It was running fine for a couple hours at least.

Good AD and Rolex is a great Brand. Hoping this is a one off. Even great companies and Brands have a bad moment.

seems like there is problem in the movement surely rolex can fix it and return to you very soon. prepare to check if there is any scratches after repair especially on the case back. good luck.

Back when I bought my first Rolex, the gorgeous SS/PL YM, from Tourneau on Madison and 53rd in New York, no one said anything about winding it and I never opened the instruction booklet. They shipped it to me in California and I wore it for a few hours, set it, and that was that. For 15 years, until it was running way slow and a tech said, “try winding it before bringing it in.”

My answer: “you can wind it?”

I had no idea.
