The 39 comes off flat to me and the font and indexes are very big on the dial throwing everything out of balance. I think the 36mm is the way to go if you can find a nice one attractively priced.

It wears quite small compared to the new subs and 42mm explorer. That might be a positive or a negative. For me it's good. But depends how often u wear long sleeve shirts or perhaps prefer flashier watches.

Have owned it, it's a fantastic Rolex and one of my favorite modern references. If you're looking for a comfortable, high quality Rolex that flies under the radar, you've found it. If you'd prefer your rolex to have a little flash, you might be disappointed.

I gave my old one to my dad, and he absolutely loves it.

It's been an interesting ride for me with this watch. I actually picked it up on the grey market last year but quickly flipped it because I wasn't a huge fan of the matte dial.

But this year I found myself lusting for the watch again and last month I was lucky enough to be offered one brand new from the AD. And so I jumped at the opportunity. Looking at it again this time the matte dial didn't really bother me anymore and I actually really like it now. Needless to say, it's a keeper for sure.

Both are great, the proportions on the 36mm May be better, I can agree with it but to me seems more vintage/dated. The 39mm is what I have as it fits my wrist perfectly and has more modern vibe and dimensions for me.

I owned a 214270 mk2 for several years. Initially I fell for the dial and the simple elegance of the watch. My collection consists of mainly of 42 mm sized watches so I just couldn't get used to the smaller case proportions of the Explorer. In the end I sold it and bought a SD43. The Explorer is a stunning watch, I just wish there was a 42 version. Keep the slim profile but just beef the case diameter up a bit!

Sorry, I forgot to mention another reason why I sold mine. The polished bezel is a magnet for hairlines. At certain angles the hairlines were starting to bother me. Again, it's a beautiful watch, just not something I enjoyed wearing.

It was my first Rolex bought in 2016 before all the madness when you could actually have your choice of pieces, and that was the one I chose.

I love it will cherish it, not going anywhere.

Love the simplicity of the explorer and it is a SS model after all, however I do prefer the Sub and the use of the bezel for timing stuff, depends if you need this or not I guess. Beautiful watch tho!

Last tool watch in Rolex line. Brushed oyster, easylink, oysterlock.......no ceramic....that is what is what I was after.

Would I prefer a 38mm better?! Yes, but thats another story.....

36 is the right size in my mind. That being said an explorer 1 is the most overrated Rolex in my opinion. How Rolex can justify charging 3000 more for it than an OP is beyond me
