Circa $28K sounds about right.
As for why… are you asking for justification?
It’s a luxury item, one of the first ROOs made in the early-mid 90s, and to turn the question on its head, what justification has Rolex for charging $8-10K for something churned out in the multi hundreds of thousands each year?

Pre-owned on Chrono24 shows this model variant can be had from $15K ish.
