Newbie wants in!!!!
Hello
I am 30yrs old and want into to the club.... However I am unable to purchase new and will start out with a used watch and look to trade up by saving. So now for the newbie Q. does the age of the watch affect the value of it.... To make myself more clear does the same watch from say 95 worth less than a watch from 2003 If they are in the same exact contition IE + 90%. Also how much is a watch devalued for not having papers, let us pretend you lost the papers, and ideally it was worth 5k with them. Whats it worth now All responses will be greatly apprieciated, even if it is a sentence or two. Thanks M. Rios |

First off Welcome to TRF.
I was told that papers add value to certain people. I myself am still waiting for mine to show up. This Tue will be a week. As far as the Value I have no experience in selling a watch but I have heard that you have to keep a new watch for at least five years before you can sell it for what you paid for it new. A used 2008 is obviously not going to sell for the same price as a new 2009 or you would just buy the 2009. It also depends on the model you are looking for? A used Date Just (DJ) will be cheaper and easier to find then a Sub or a GMT or any other sport watch. I think sport watches hold their value better then a DJ. Also what brand? Ya this is a Rolex forum but I think half the users own other brands such as Omega or Panerai. Hope this helps Last edited by postiff; 3 March 2009 at 04:59 PM.. Reason: spelling |

People buy watches without papers all the time, well at least some do. I don't. Papers are "provenance" and increase the legitimacy of the particular piece. They tell you what country the watch was from and the old style US paper certificate has a style number that describes the model, bezel, dial, and bracelet that was original to the piece.
I have seen many on eBay that, if the papers are pictured, do not match the watch description the way it was originally issued from Rolex. I then get a tab bit suspicious as to where the changes took place and more importantly, are they genuine Rolex parts???? I guess I am one of those guys that if I do not personally know the owner or by reputation from this fine site, then papers are worth their weight in gold to me. As they say, "Buy the seller, then the watch." |

Welcome to TRF M.Rios..it depends on the model of the watch..some watches when it goes old it doesnt affect the price of going up...there are certain models that goes up when its old...Papers are just for fromality or for authenticity verification...but most of people wants it with papers...but if you send your watch to RSC it doesnt matter if you have the papers or not...if its fake or stoles they will just take it away though..hahahaha

Well you asked several questions ,to me the answers depend on how you define a Rolex Watch and why you want the watch. First , How do you define a Rolex? All original with no replacement parts ( such as bracelet or dial which are typically replaced on vintage Rolexes.) If they are replaced are aftermarket items ok with you? If so which parts? Typically the watches you see on auction sites are what I call made up. They may take parts from different watches and put them together. The parts are all authentic but not from the same watch. These watches will be less expensive than a one owner watch. Next, when has the watch been serviced and by whom? A watch recently serviced by either of the three Rolex Service Centers will cost more than those serviced by a local watchmaker. These factors all affect price and desirability. So a one owner watch recently serviced by Rolex with box, booklet & papers is a cream puff. If that is your hypothetical 5k watch then the same model unserviced, auction site watch with only an aftermarket bracelet might be 3k and with aftermarket bracelet, dial & no warrantee might be 2k. Thats my opinion.

Bienvenido M. Rios! You have great dealers in the area for brand new, I do not know of pre-owned in McAllen. (I have bought several new watches in your city, pre-owned in Houston).
Saludos and enjoy the hunt! |

Two years is too long for missing out all of the excitment of wearing your TT Daytona! ADs are really dealing like never before for TT. Here is mine purchased last month for the same amount as the SS Daytona!
