The Horological Distortion Zone

A physical and emotional space in which rational thought regarding wrist watches is distorted. Thoughts and emotions occurring in the horological distortion zone may appear as total gibberish once a person is outside it’s domain. For example:
“ $52k, that’s a great price for this steel sports watch.”
“ I’m totally devastated, my steel sports watch daily wearer just got scratched. I think I need to send it for laser welding.”

It would be great if everyone wore their watches without concern for dings, dents and scratches, and without concern over maximizing resale. I believe that is the best mindset to be in to fully enjoy what they own. But, that's just my take.

Wear the watch. Don't let it wear you.

Awesome post actually. It's crazy to think that when I first become interested in mechanical watches I valued a metal bracelet for longevity and not having to worry. Fast forward thirty plus years and now I worry about my metal bracelet and wonder whether I should use a rubber strap to save the metal...lmao...crazy!

Luckily common sense prevails and just go oem on my Rolex, scratches and dings be dammed. It's meant to wear and enjoy in daily life and my life is pretty rugged, so be it.
Why would I buy a watch for a safe deposit box to wear and enjoy and show all his other safe deposit box friends what a cool watch he wears while I'm out slumming it with my Garmin Fenix.

The safe deposit box can buy it's own damn watch to wear.

I think this happens often, when you value stuff more than it's worth.

The Horological Distortion Zone

It really is just easier to cut the “stress” out of the equation...just enjoy it for what is every time you put it on, and stop being concerned about it (easier said than done, but optimal). The fact that you can quickly offload it without taking much of a hit (or break even or make money) is just a cool bonus.

Just wait till you meet the exotic car guys, as anything less than a few hundred thousand dollars is cheap. It's all relative I guess.

Yes, as a friend (female) tells me when talking about my watch enthusiasm, "you are weird."

So, then...if one cannot leave the Horological Distortion Zone, does that then mean they have Horological Distortion Syndrome, HDS - maybe Horological Distortion Disorder, HDD.

Of course, I want my watches to look good: who doesn't? In my 55 years, 30 wearing Rolex, I've smashed into metal framed doorways, dropped it indoors on the floor (thankfully not tile) and 'clipped' it on various cupboards, desks, and other misc. obstructions. Not to say I'm a clod or lack a sense of balance. In total, the 'big hits' were far and few between but they happened. The only thing I ever worried about was a cracked crystal. Amazingly, the biggest scares only resulted in paint of the object it came in contact with ending up on the glass or crown! Careful cleaning and it was (almost) good as new Obviously, there were scratches but no gouges, dents and never a malfunction of the movement.

In day to day wear under normal circumstances, a Rolex watch can be subjected to mishaps and will rarely fail. Even my first Air King was worn with complete confidence although I exercised "situational awareness" which is just common sense when wearing a pricy timepiece. Or a bespoke suit, expensive sunglasses, whatever. Clothes get lightly soiled, creased and might get torn but can be cleaned or repaired. Going to a Rock Concert with a mosh pit in Armani is stupid. In short, owning something "nice" carries responsibilities but the expectation of enjoying something and keeping it
'show-room' new is unrealistic.

I'm sure it takes a few years of ownership of a Rolex watch to understand it won't, CAN'T remain perfect when worn as intended. Maybe under glass, but not as an enjoyable timepiece.

Even though we all share several traits as TRF members, we are different in how we enjoy these watches. Some are comfortably carefree as they weather life's bumps on their wrists. Others would be stressed out doing so. Interestingly, there's often no direct correlation to one's net worth and their perspective on protecting or just wearing and abusing their watches. It's more connected to individual personalities, in my experience.

I’ve been called much worse than “distorted” lol. I buy what I want to wear and I wear it truly daily to everything. The rare exception is while riding a bike... I worked hard to pay for my timepiece and I enjoy every moment from when I put it on first thing in the morning to taking it off before bed...

This is true. I’ve known people who would obsessively inspect their watch after a bump but would give his family expensive watches and cars like they’re burgers.

100% true!

Also, after that first scratch, it matters a LOT less.

Sneaker mentality...

The parallels to the shoe market is a slightly terrifying... specially when the comparrison to the secondary selling is concerned.

I couldn't agree more...they are watches, built by Rolex to be worn!

Distorsion exists for one reason only ... current market value .

Do you really want to scratch that valuable Daytona ? If it was worth MRSP only many more would be scratching it .....

Whats the price difference between new and new with stickers at a Grey dealer ? Even the stickers makes a difference .
