Philippe Dufour

My question is whether he makes all of his components from scratch by himself, turning raw materials into the requisite watch components, in the fashion of Roger Smith or George Daniels. Does anyone know?

My segue question is where do companies like F.P. Journe and Laurent Ferrier obtain these components? I know they design their movements, but I assume they’re not constructing everything from scratch.

AFAIK Dufour was one of the first who used CAD for movement construction. He sources case, dial and movement parts from partners. He no doubt has the skills to do everything by hand, but the Simplicity is really a masterpiece in how to do finishing, not really in making a watch from scratch by one person.
If you are looking for something made without CNC by one or two persons I would look towards Oscillon, Atelier de Chronometrie, maybe Vianney and possibly a few others watchmakers.
Even these and Greubel sources a few parts for their hand made watches. This would typically be components like jewels, mainspring, hairspring, gaskets, springbars...

F.P. Journe has his own manufacture(s) where the cases, dials and movement parts are made. He uses, like Roger Smith, CNC machines to make everything from scratch. Still jewels etc. Like mentioned above is sourced from other partners.

I believe in comparison, Journe does a lot more in-house than LF. A good indie brand that does a lot in-house, Lang and Heyne.

I love the finishing on the Laurent Ferrier watches. And I love their cases.
