Interesting question. I like to meet people with whom I can have nice conversations, and I don't have a clear idea of which rock star would be interesting enough for that. Loving their music doesn't necessarily mean I'd love the person, so I'll say none and pass my chance for someone else in this case.

Howdy,
Dead? Elvis Presley and Freddie Mercury. Alive, Elvis Presley and Nick Rhodes. I'm hedging my bets on the King. Take care, Ruddiger |

I've met 2.
Alice Cooper and Steven Tyler while walking around in Maui. (Not together, different years). Said hello. Talked for 30 seconds and moved on. It neither made nor ruined my day. Respect their success, but I don't fawn over celebs because I've met so many in LA in the 80s. They're just people. Oh, also said hi to Jimmy Buffett at the next table at Momma's Fish House in Maui. |

Bruce Springsteen and Van Morrison, love their music but they both seem to at least espouse some serious personal values etc and that would make for good conversation. And they have been around for so long the stories they could share would be great!

Cool thread!
During my university years and some time after i worked my way from stage hand to stage manager, did that in various locations and so on. Saw a lot of famous musicians and hanged out with bunch... Dave from FF was really cool, and had a beer with AiC, Andrew from Wolfmother was amazing guy too, Iron Maiden are amazing bunch of fellas. All down to earth and great to talk for a minute or two. Started working on my career and I regret not meeting Jimmy Page |

Oh and I spent a day with Hoyt Axton (and Merlin Olsen) shooting a FTD commercial.
Not sure you'd call Hoyt Axton a rock star but he was a musician and a prolific songwriter. Among his best-known compositions (or co-writing credits) are: "Greenback Dollar" covered by The Kingston Trio "The Pusher", by Steppenwolf on their debut album, 1968; this version was also used in the soundtrack of the classic 1969 motion picture Easy Rider "No-No Song", which became a #3 hit for Ringo Starr in March 1975 "Never Been To Spain", covered by Three Dog Night, Waylon Jennings, Elvis Presley, and many others "Joy to the World", the Three Dog Night hit from 1971 which held US #1 for six weeks "Snowblind Friend" (1971), covered by Steppenwolf "Lightning Bar Blues" (1973), covered by Brownsville Station, Arlo Guthrie, and Hanoi Rocks "Sweet Misery" (1974), covered by John Denver and Martha Reeves "When the Morning Comes" (1974) "Boney Fingers" (1974), with Renee Armand "You're the Hangnail in My Life" (1977) "Della and the Dealer" (1979), (performed on WKRP in Cincinnati; reached top 20 of the Billboard country chart in the U.S. and the top 50 of the British pop chart) "Hotel Ritz" (1979) "Rusty Ol' Halo" (1979) |

HARD to answer because the two people I might list first would probably look at me with disdain if we were to actually meet.
Since you said ROCK, Frank Zappa and Jimi Hendrix. |

Down memory lane:
I knew Sherwood Ball, son of Ernie Ball (Ball Guitar Strings) Sherwood was probably not famous because he was a behind the scenes guy. But as anyone in the music business knows that every song you hear on commercials and soundtracks has session musicians working day in and day out on this stuff. Big name players also sit in on these gigs when they're not touring. A lot of rock and pop albums have session musicians on many of their songs doing horns and other insturments. Sherwood also had a band called Gumbo that did gigs everywhere and in the bar I worked at he played there a couple of times a week, with famous musicians sitting in just for fun. Mark Knopfler, Tower of Power Horns, Leo Sayer........ Sherwood Ball, eldest son of Ernie Ball, who any musician worth his salt knows is the gold standard for guitar strings and things. His great grandfather, Ernest R. Ball, wrote "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling", "Let the Rest of the World Go By", etc. and co-founded ASCAP. Growing up in a family where artistic endeavors were encouraged, Sherwood has worked both in acting and in music most of his life. He won "Best Humorous Scene" at UCLA at age 14 for his portrayal of "The Imaginary Invalid" by Moliere and acted in over 60 national commercials. He has enjoyed success in the USA, Japan, & Scandinavia as a singer/songwriter in his own right and as a sought-after session singer/guitarist. Sherwood was one of the top three male soloist studio singers in Los Angeles for 20 years for television, film and sang or announced in over 2,000 commercials. He sang in Nightmare Before Xmas, theme "Hangin' w/ Mr. Cooper", Demolition Man, Wayne's World, Let it Ride, Always, etc etc. Earlier, Sherwood toured and played lead guitar/vocals with Three Dog Night, Etta James, Jackson Browne, Joe Walsh, Stephen Stills, Bonnie Raitt, etc. Sherwood held the long-term gig as The Voice of Toyota announcing from '85-'05 when he moved to the Big Island of Hawaii. Before moving to HAwaii, his interest in film led him to direct, produce, edit, score, create computer motion graphics in 5 films. The latest being, "The Osage Tribal Murders" feature length documentary. Sherwood recently moved back to L.A. to record the upcoming soulful big band CD with the Les Hooper band. |

Eric Clapton and James Taylor.
while not at the same level; not even close I did get to spend a lot of time with Gavin Degraw and the members of Sister Hazel while I was Merch/Stage Manager for a small VA based band years ago. Gavin was a bit of a pre-madonna until you got to know him. I knew from the first time I met him he would be a superstar. |
