Opinions of trading in a JLC Squadra World Chronograph for another Rolex?

I’ve had a JLC Squadra World Chronograph for the past 11 yrs when the “big” was the trend in the 2000’s. I’ve recently gotten it back from a 9 month service.

I also bought a DJ41 smooth bezel oyster bracelet with black dial last year. I’ve been thinking of trading the Squadra for another Rolex and am thinking along the lines of the GMT Master II 116710LN (I think the BLNR and BLRO are still out of reach at the moment), or Explorer II 216570 Polar.

What are your thoughts firstly about trading in the Squadra? Or should I hang on to it?

Secondly, what are your thoughts of the 116710LN vs the 216570? With the GMT Master II’s, there’s more talk about the BLNRs and BLROs, but don’t know where the plain black LNs stand compared to the 216570 Polar?

As with all things in life it is personal preference. If you feel like you'd like to have a GMT or an ExpII over the JLC, go for it. As for the GMT vs ExpII, I actually prefer the LN over the BLNR lately so that wouldn't effect me and I feel like GMT is useful as you can quickly adjust the second timezone you want to track, but I do like the Polar lately.

This watch is not my style. I would trade it.

I like JLC. Cool looking watch. Very Monoco. I wouldn't trade that for a boring DJ.

Market on JLC is very soft, so prepare yourself for a big loss, especially after you just paid out for a big service.

However, the market for these will only be getting softer as Rolex further separates itself from other brands, so as time goes by it will become increasingly difficult for you to find someone willing to take on a slow selling JLC in exchange for a fast selling Rolex...even more so since there is a perception that the market is scaling back into smaller watches and dealers will act accordingly.

If you can live the the money you will lose, I would trade it now while you still can...

No, not trading for a DJ. Already have a DJ. Thinking if to trade, then for a GMT Master II LN, or Explorer II Polar?

Probably be tough to find a trader. If you sell it, it’s going to take bit. I’ve sold 3 JLC’s last year, all of them sold but done think selling them is like selling a Rolex.

I'd go for the GMT LN. Everything you could need. I prefer the rotating ceramic bezel over the fixed brushed SS on the 216570.

I would unload the Squadra now. JLCs are soft on the secondary market and the Squadra is not their most popular line.

Yes, I am not a fan of that JlC and it’s massive size was a regretful attempt to chase trends, unfortunately when that happens, watches do not age well.

Just my .02

The JLC does not fit your wrist. Selling after a service is at least a small gift to a potential buyer.

If you are wearing it after 11 years then you should probably keep it as the resale will not be good. Otherwise just take the hit and move on.

Sell it, as it is fresh from a service and will probably bring as much now as ever. Take what you can get from a Trusted Seller and get a watch that fits your current likes.

True, it is also somewhat limited edition with 1500 made (well 1500 of -each- type of Squadra Hometime, GMT, Chrono, World Chrono, etc.). So it's not so rare and don't think the limited edition has helped in keeping its value. My former Reverso Duo from 2000 OTOH has doubled. But I have already given that to my sister.

I'm gonna bring the Squadra into the shops to see what I can get from it, although undecided if I'd let it go.

With regards to the two options, I think I'm leaning towards the GMT Master II LN, even though visually the Exp II Polar 42mm seems to be visually more wow on initial glance (no offence to Exp II fans). I don't really flip watches regularly. I tend to hang on to them for 10-20 yrs and if I get a next Rolex, it's likely to stay with me for at least that duration, or for life. My gut tells me the GMT Master II LN would age better than the Exp II Polar 42mm (but the 40mm may be a different story).

Let us know what offers you get. Will be curious as to the state of the market on this...

Dropped the Squadra to be evaluated. Hopefully to hear from them soon. Meanwhile, got a chance to try a few watches. The last one is a solid gold Sub. Not the first time I've tried it, managed to try one with blue dial/bezel in Tokyo last year - heavy!
