I think the same principle applies to all Rolex (indeed almost any luxury good). You're not getting value for money, they're all mass produced. But that's not why you're buying it.

I also want to pass my Rolex(s) on to younger members of my family. They will know what a Rolex is, even if it is cursory. Passing on a Casio would have less appeal in my eyes - and probably theirs!

People don't know nothing about Rolex...

Bottom line Daytona is a superior watch over the seagull. Hype or no hype. To say otherwise is just stupidity, ignorance or stubbornness or all of the above.

The OP is just a troll that’s stirring the pot. The tone of the post to begin this thread was to incite and antagonize (even the title) disguised with some historical talk on movements. Let the OP have his day in sun.

I refuse to buy a watch named after a bird that eats trash and shits on everyone at the beach.

Even if they wash the trash down with a sip of coke or Pepsi? They certainly fly better than batman. Jealous much?

I love Daytona at retail price.. got one paying high premium over it just to check the watch out, indeed is an incredible watch and I would pay retail to get it. Will let go now at the same high price that I got it for, it’s definitely overhyped but it wouldn’t be if we could just get one on retail and greys didn’t hold cases and cases full of ceramic Daytonas

I didn't realize antacid helps a movement.

Quite understandable Lee. I felt the same way. Had to wait until this morning to work up the enthusiasm to post.

Don't worry about me! :)

Its the other way around. The 3000 was a budget version of the 3035, it was made to replace the 1530 no date movement so they could end the 5513 in 1991.

Elite branding, iconic status, market rarity and pop culture mystique are earned not from horological significance, but from the luxury buyers insatiable desire to have what is difficult to obtain.

Seagulls are common, hundreds, if not thousands on every beach. Bald Eagles are rare, limited in number, majestic and graceful. Both birds, but comparable only in that they’re both birds.

Agree, except bald eagles are not rare. Alaska has a plenty.

Yes, it’s exactly the “popularity” or it piece factor that blinds people to the facts, or from an objective analysis of the piece. Other than I gotta have it, well why, because it’s awesome, why, it’s a Daytona. People are chasing the high of having an it piece and the status associated with that. Nothing wrong with that, but let’s not pretend folks the Daytona does not have its limitations.

a seagull once shat on my ex whilst in newquay in cornwall.

i feel like i should return and thank the bugger.

something about daytonas being too expensive and a bunch of people can’t read them and blah blah

the daytona has been my favorite watch since 2001. no hype, no social media, just a simple ad in some throwaway magazine.

it is still my favorite watch.

i’m glad the OP don’t no want one.

Rolex is not the most accurate watch out there, maybe today an Apple watch is.

Some products are made with such care and attention to design that they becomes more than the sum of their parts. Rolex is one of those objects to me.

Nice way to put it
