My TT Sub had an overhaul about 2 years ago at the Toronto RSC. Recently it developed a problem. More often than not, when I unscrewed the crown and pulled it out, nothing happened. The crown just freewheeled. Couldn't set the time or date. I took it back to my AD and they sent it back to the RSC for repair. I also asked if they could clean up the bracelet and case while it was in for service.

Fast forward to this past Wednesday. The AD called and it went something like this:

AD: Rolex has informed us that the bracelet and case refinish will be $290.

Me: what about the problem with the crown, the reason I sent it in in the first place?

AD: oh, that's right, there was a problem with it. We'll get back to you.

Friday, AD: Rolex says there'll be no charge for the crown "adjustment".

Soooo..... Three hundred bucks for a polish job, but no charge for the mechanical repair/adjustment.

Oh well, in for a dime, in for a dollar.

Was the watch polished at the last overhaul too? Seems like you should have declined it this time around if so.

Quite a chunk of change for an exterior clean-up.................

It should look like new again..............

Wow, that seems really expensive for a polish! Is the AD taking a cut?

Last time the wife polished the crown it cost me a house, car, and a trip to the Caymans. From where I set $290 sounds cheap.

Ouch!

I have a theory - polishing a case and/or a bracelet is probably much easier and faster to do than going inside the movement and may require less skill, so it likely brings a very high profit margin. So, they push that on you. Kind of like how they always push a drink on you when you order a sandwich - drinks make much more money than the sandwich.
