Code 11:59
So I went to the AP boutique in NY yesterday to pass the time before an early dinner with a friend. I specifically went to see the Code in person. Having read so much about the awful roll out of the model, the overwhelmingly negative reviews and seen the lackluster photographs, I figured it would be interesting to try one on. First, I found the staff in the boutique to be very welcoming. The AP rep I dealt with was simply fantastic. He was knowledgeable, charming, witty and enthusiastically went to the back to get me several different Codes and ROs. Lots of fun, even asking me to close my eyes until he put on a watch he got from the back that he thought I would like. It was the Ghost, and he was right, loved it! So right off the bat, I can say it was one of the best experiences I have ever had in either a boutique or an AD.
As for the code, here are my impressions: 1. Case designed was visually very interesting and pleasing 2. The crystal that reveals layers when seen from an angle was very cool 3. He passed a piece of paper between the lugs and the case to show how the lugs were not connected to the case in any traditional fashion, I think he said it helped with the comfort on the wrist allowing the band to wrap around the wrist for a better fit, but don’t quote me 4. I thought the in house movement was beautiful and he explained that AP informed him that the shape and hollowing of the rotor was designed so optimize its oscillation 5. The blue dialed chronograph was very nice. I would happily wear it and was quite surprised by how much I liked it. 6. The sweep seconds dial was flat and looked like a fashion watch as others have mentioned. Very boring. 7. The blue dialed tourbillon was very nice, however, it reminded too much of a watch I like better, the blue dialed tourbillon VC Overseas. 8. Finally, they had a white gold bolshoi limited edition I tried on that was stunning.A simple sweep seconds that stole the show with its deep blue dial ringed by a dark blue/black that was out of this world. So all in all I walked away thinking much more highly of this model. Yes, there is a lot of room for improvement, but I believe it also has a lot of potential. |

I saw a blue and black time and date 11.59 and liked them both.
I felt they were a little thick and big for a strap watch for me personally but admired them nonetheless. If AP came out with it in steel and around $15k, I think it would be a much bigger hit. I agree with your comments about staff and experience at that boutique. Once they determine if you’re a real watch person, they bust out the good stuff and enjoy seeing us enamored with pieces they know we’re not going to buy. It’s a good strategy, I’m still dreaming of some of the pieces I tried on. |

I understood that they may be introducing a few new Code references soon. Will be interesting to see what they do with this platform.

Yes, the AD rep said as much. Of course, he used that as an argument for me buying the original since they won’t be around after the new references come out...

Sadly that new one is a one-off for a charity auction, per their website.
