Coating
Hey there,
from time to timed I see coated AP´s (also Lagerfeld owned one of them). As I am informed - I have heard this from Rolex - it is not allowed to "change" a model. If you take a Rolex to the revision is will not be returned until "resetting" it to the original version. I wonder how this works with the "MAD Paris" versions, but my question refers to the AP coatings - e.g. this version: (cannot post links - on C24 there is one 26300st in black in the Netherlands) Is there someone out there who owns a coated AP and can tell me something about experiences with the AP service, also I would like to know how the coating works in everyday life - will the real metal soon shine through? Thanks a lot in advance, best Nick |

It’s a PVD coating and the steel will wear through over time, a bit like a Leica camera. IMO the Mad Paris editions are pointless if resale value is important to you as demand will be far less.

Google: lagerfield royal oak, and you’ll see good examples of how the pvd wears over time. The Watch Collecting Lifestyle article is really good and shows HSTE’s Lagerfield. The articles from Watches by SJX and Hodinkee are fine, too.
I don’t recall anyone here having a modded black PVD Audemars Piguet, so not sure anyone here can answer your AP servicing question from personal experience. HSTE on Watch Pro Site might respond if you reach out to him, but you can also just inquire with AP. And as far as your pricing question, only you know how you would feel about spending that amount of money on the watch. You can look on Watch Recon to get historic resale asking prices on the watch model, or you can check Chrono 24 and other sites for current resale asking prices. But none of those will have been modified with PVD coating. |
