Consumating a Pre-Owned Purchase at RSC

Another member mentioned the idea of buying a used Rolex from a private party sale, meeting at a RSC. Am I correct to take this to mean, that if a seller is willing to stand behind their product, you can meet at a RSC, and hand the watch to the person at reception, and ask them to authenticate the watch? Would Rolex do that? If they did, they would surely confiscate any counterfeit watch or part, so a seller has to have the faith that the watch is genuine.

Think Rolex would allow us to turn their reception areas at the RSC's service centers into swap meets?

Rolex will not authenticate the watch for you. The only way for you to verify that the watch is authentic is to submit it to RSC for an overhaul which is minimum $500. Once they have it apart during the overhaul, you'll be notified if everything is as it should be and what extra's may/may not be needed.

Someone mentioned here that the best RSC can do to autheticate it for you without having to submit it for an overhaul is to ask them to pressure test the watch for you.

RSC may or may not charge you for this. If they're not busy, they'd have it done for you while you wait.

As for doing this deal at an RSC, why would Rolex care to be involved in your transaction, and allow you to use their premise for this activity???

Well, I am not suggesting that Rolex would participate or condone the deal. But if you and I met at a RSC, and you had with you the watch you are going to sell me, you can ask Rolex to pressure test the watch, while I wait with you. When they come back with the watch, we would both know if it is 100% authentic. Then we can consummate our transaction, either at the RSC or somewhere else.

Think this would work?

I think the idea behind it is, if the watch is fake, and the seller knows it, they will never agree to meet you at a Rolex Dealer or Rolex Service Center. Another option, is to contact a local watchmaker, work out a deal with him to open the watch and inspect the movement (for a fee) while the seller is present. Again if it's a scam, they'll never agree to this.

Depending on the watch your looking at (Sport VS Dress) a real good swiss or Japan fake might pass a water resistance test, but I doubt it would pass a high pressure tests, like for a Submariner.

Hong Kong RSC will authenticate for free, I bought my Air King from a private online seller. I paid after RSC authenticated the watch, but it took me 2 weeks.

It won't work at the Dallas RSC, the less-than-friendly lady at the counter will have no part of it. I agree that the person selling a fake would not want to meet at an RSC, but if they know the RSC won't authenticate, maybe they would. Makes no sense to me why the RSC won't take the 10 minutes to pop the back off the watch and charge the customer a nominal fee for the service.

You could meet at an RSC and have the person ask for a service estimate on the watch. They will take it in the back and open it up. They will then list potential problems on the estimate invoice sheet. If it is a fake they won't work on it. If it is legit, then you know how much a service would cost. You aren't under any obligation to have the service done.

Don't advertise to the RSC that is what you are doing but it will work. As far as they are concerned, you are just a friend along for the ride.

That is incorrect. The Toronto RSC will authenticate a Rolex. Now for the fine print, the fee is $150.00 and takes 7 days.

RSC Bexley will authenticate a watch for you on the spot gratis, if you ask them to work on the watch (ie adjust the strap = F O C) they will enter you on their system as the new owner

Yep.Posted mine Tuesday morning had it back Thursday morning complete with documentation from service, and letter authenticating the watch.

Like Chris said it er.... cost me nothing. The big zero. Not a penny.

No matter how I say it it was very, very impressive. The turnaround was superb.

Several years ago I took a watch to the RSC in Dallas, and within 10 minutes they gave me an answer as to its authenticity.

At least in Dallas, that will not work if it is a newer watch. I tried that with a GMT IIC, the witch at the counter said it was a new watch and therefore would not require service.

I bought a YM (16622) SS/Plat last year from someone I know and he did not have the papers. So even though I knew the seller, I still ask him if he would meet me in RSC in SF Downtown and he agree. We met up at RSC and the Tech. took it apart, did some testing and long story short he Authenticated the watch with free of charge. He even told me that watch was last service in 2006. He did to me because my brother and I had our watch service there before.

That's fine if he comes to Canada, but he's doing this in New York.
