Why is yachtmaster so underrated

Looking at trading in my steel no date sub on either a bluesy or the sea dweller but man the dark rhodium or the blue yachtmaster has caught my eye lately. Why is there not anymore love for the yachtmaster's?

Bluesy is my #1 but I think the Yachtmaster, especially the blue, is stunning and underrated.

It isn't underrated in my opinion. I like the dials but I do not like the bezels.

Because the first iteration of the Yachtmaster was not well received.

There are people out there who buy and appreciate it for its merits and don’t really care about popularity

I am glad they are not hyped. Its on my radar for a purchase and I hope to find one severely cheaper than msrp.

I personally found the bezels to be distracting, but I think in general they're beautiful. One of the few sporty lines that plays around with dial colors!

True, considering YM is the rare SS professional that's not to difficult to obtain, may be best that it's not very hyped.

I actually think the non-ceramic bezel is what turns people off based on comments around here.

I am a fan of the YM line. The rhodium dial would be my second choice for sure. However my number 1 is the RG on OF. I just like the band of the OF and am looking forward to purchase that soon. I guess a reason why the line in general is underrated is it doesn’t have the history of the submariner.

I've never quite understood the criticism against this model. The yacht floats my boat.

Because it looks/functions like a submariner but is only 100m water resistant.

Wrong

Water resistant is irrelevant. No one on TRF buys for diving anyway. Let’s be serious.

(I’m sure 1 or 2 members will chime in here and claim to be divers). But 99.99% aren’t....

I m a YM 42 owner......love it.
it has its place amongst my divers (sub/JC/SD43)
its different, and I like the sinister black on silver. I like the heft of the pm.
I m a big fan of the rubber b straps so the oysterflex is great for me.
can't comment on how popular the other YMs might be, I guess I can see how some of them might be marmite.
as for 'only 100m' waterproofing, so what.......I dive (albeit infrequently) and 10m is about all I ll ever achieve not sure id wear a YM too dive in anyway.

This might get some criticism but I have can imagine that people that spends over 8k really want their watch to be fully recognized as a Rolex and the YM flies a bit under the radar with the plat bezel that isn’t that Rolex-ish to common people...other things that has been discussed before is the “shadow” that occurs on the five digit YM bezel and is hard to get out without re-blasting it...last but not least, the bezel scratch very easily...to brighten up this post here is my two YM:s that I love!

One of my absolute favorite Rolex references. I like the size, heft, blacked out bezel, Oysterflex; it’s really got it all. I don’t own one, but if I could make it happen, I would love to own that watch. It’s going to be a few more years for me, then we will see if it is still at the top of my list.

As much as I wanted to love the YM over the years, I could never warm up to the bezel. Very comfortable watch, though.

I really like the new rhodium and blue dial YM, they wear very comfortable as well. What turns me off isn't the material of the bezel, but the size of numbers used in the bezel. If they were smaller, I think it would look more proportionate.

That being said the YM on oysterflex with the black bezel is ace. With the all black bezel and matching dial color, you don't notice the size of the numbers on the bezel, imo.

Also, the fact it only comes on PCL bracelet might detract others as well.

I was offered both variants at my AD recently. Despite previously thinking I preferred the blue dial, I actually preferred the rhodium in person. Only reason I never went for it was the fact I was looking for a daily watch and I worried about how the platinum bezel would hold up to dings etc.

Not sure why it’s underrated but glad it was as I could get one. Much prefer its case profile to the sub.

TRIVIA: The very first Yacht Masters had the same case as the Submariner, but then in order to make it a more stand alone model, the Submariner cases that were to be used for the new Yachts were given to the Jool Tool Lady for refinishing. The SS Yacht never saw the Submariner case, it was in 18k only.

I do dive and one of the reasons I wanted a sub... That being said I have been diving for 30 years and can count on one hand the times of have even been close to the water resistance limits of a Yachtmaster much less the sub. And I was young and foolish then. Even most commercial divers rarely go below 200 feet. ROV's do most of the work now.

I've been thinking of trading the sub for the YM but that decision will take some time...

For me it’s the bezel. Raised numbers, rather than engraved numbers, make the watch appear all bezel and disproportioned.

I wonder if anyone has photochopped bezel ideas for these because the rest of the YM looks great.

This is actually my favourite Dial ever put on a modern Rolex aside from Meteorite and stone dials.

Yacht-Master was my first Rolex. I went to AD and ask for SS Sub., SA told me that it will hard to find, many people are waiting inline. She showed me this watch and I fell in love with it. I asked for a better price than MSRP, I got 10% discount, I took it.

I love the bezel. It gives the YM 1 a Terminator type look.

I prefer monochromatic looks so the rhodium dial 126622 was perfect for me. GMTs and Subs' bezels are too "colorful" and "distracting" to me personally. It really also helped I didn't have to wait too long to get one

Yup, me too. I have technical dive watches just “because” I can. They serve no practical diving reasons for me. I never need anything more than a wr100m on any of my diving. I wear a BLNR on vacations even when diving might occur. At home I will dive with my more impressive dive watches as not wanting to be a hypocrite.

It makes sense for my case. I am usually not a fan of Rolex and its typical designs. But YM def got me into it.

I've warmed up to the YM40 TT in RG and chocolate dial. Took me a while but I really am starting to like it.
