Looking to buy my first AP and am looking for help
Hello TRF members
First I hope everyone is safe and healthy. I’ve been a hard core rolex guy for the last few years and managed to acquire all the hard to get SS rolex models. I love them all but have been wanting to expand into other brands AP really catches my eye, especially the 15500 or the 15400 I don’t have any relationship with AP boutique or AD so will most likely have to go grey I narrowed it down to the grey or silver dials, as the blue one is way overpriced In this market, what’s a reasonable grey price to pay? I know there are a couple listed in the classified but what someone asks for isn’t what they always get Second question is the dial color. I’m torn between the grey and silver and will be happy with either. Is one more sought after or preferred over the other? Last, I don’t want to start an argument of which one is “better” 15500 or 15400. I know each have their pros and cons but what’s the consensus ? Any input, opinions and of course pictures would be greatly appreciated Please stay safe and healthy

There’s quite a few thread on this topic but I’ll be happy to contribute. Having owned both, I prefer the 15400 vs the 15500. I feel the dial is more balanced on the 15400 where as when I had the 15500 it reminded me of a clock. My ownership experience on the 15500 was less than 24 hours.
Between the silver and the ruthenium dial you are debating, I’m a fan of the ruthenium/grey. If I didn’t already own a black 15400 that would be my color of choice. Good luck! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I'm pretty happy with my 15500st. As the 15400 is discontinued you will have to find one preowned.
15500st does have a slight waiting time but it is still possible to get it new at a boutique depending on where you live. The white 15500st is a new release so it may be in more demand than the grey but i dont think you can really go wrong with either.

I think you may have some luck if you talk with a boutique or AD. A little less than a week ago I spoke with one and they took my deposit for a 15500ST without any relationship. I’m also half way across the country. Now we’re working on delivery timing and getting a custom rotor made with my initials.
As far as dial, definitely go for the grey! Best of luck to you. |

IMO the 15500 dial looks very empty and vacant. I also feel as though the grey dial is lovely but blends in too much with the steel on the watch. Also, what’s your wrist size as these wear like a 42/43 rolex?

The 155 'wears' a lot bigger than the 154 due to the open dial. I'm used to big watches but I do feel the dial on the 155 just looks too big. I initially was very much a supporter of the 155, figuring the clean dial was an asset, but having owned one for a while, now feel that I'd probably prefer the 154. I strongly suggest you try one before committing.

Thank you all for input!
I didn’t know I would have a chance buying new from a boutique or AD! I will certainly give it a shot. Living quite far away from any boutique or AD where I have to fly to get to one made me think that trusted sellers is my joy option especially with no relationship with those ADs My wrist is 7.75” I tried the jumbo before and it felt like a 40/41mm rolex so I assume either the 155 or 154 will fill my wrist

At your wrist size both the 15400 and 15500 will fit fine - it'll just come down to what you prefer visually. As I say, although physically both the same size the 155 looks bigger.

My wrist is only 6.4", my first AP was 37mm, it looks so small. My second was 15500OR 41mm, from the beginning it looked a bit too big, but after I wear it for awhile, I love it very much, most watches these days are big anyway. I always like brand new and the latest, so I would prefer 15500 over 15400. I don't feel like is too big or empty, it looks clean and classy instead.
At this moment, most people try to spend less money on luxury items, so I think you will have a more chance at ADs or Boutique also. With your wrist size, 15400/15500 should fit you very well. Colors are preference, buy the one that you like the most, they all look very good, don't try to save little money and get the second choice. |
