Is there a way to get the lume back

Have an old 79 Explorer I. The dial lume is completely dead. Is there a way to get it back?

The only way to make it glow again would be to have it replaced. There are--to say the least--mixed opinions on the desirability of doing that.

It's your watch. Just know that replacing the lume will probably reduce its value by thousands of $$.

You just only can replace the lume..that's the only alternative.

Service dial and service hands. But keep the originals (where the bulk of the vintage value is). That means not going to RSC.

Is there a luminova service dial for this model? Then he could have a watchmaker swap the dial and keep the original safely stored while enjoying the luminova...

Find a dial and hands with rough lume and have them relumed in Super Luminova, Then you can put original dial and hands back in if you ever need to.

Yeah the RSC has service dials with LumiNova - but I’d suggest what some others have said.

Get a new dial & hands off eBay or elsewhere and have a watchmaker replace the originals so OP can save them.

Yeah that’s good idea since it’s be cheaper methinks.

The OP should know that if RSC replaces the dial and hands, they will not return the originals to him. So buying them on the secondary market is the only viable option.

What would the cost be for a new dial and hands?

Are you asking about a new dial and hands from the Rolex Service Center? This would be in conjunction with a full movement service, so you'd also have to factor in that cost. The movement service is probably in the ballpark of $750 USD, and I would guess that dial and hands would be roughly the same. And as I mentioned above, they won't return the originals.

Like Dan said you can't just buy a new dial and hands or new service hands and dial without sending it in to a RSC. Go on ebay find a dial and set of hands and send them off and have them re-lumed and preserve the originals. I went through this with my daily 1505 . See this thread.

Best of luck. Chris
