Who decided in the end not to buy a Sub and why?

And what did you do/choose instead?

Me. Thought it was less versatile than I wanted. Got dj36 oyster and smooth bezel with silver dial and sticks. Same movement as sub, more than enough water resistance, almost identical bracelet, more versatile to me than a dive watch. Also fits me better. Don’t regret it. Might get a sub when they update it. That said, I feel the DJ checks the boxes I would use a sub for so I’m more focused on other brands/models for now.

I'm holding off on the Sub - mostly in the hope they will increase size and add a pop of colour somewhere. These are long-shots, but I live in hope.

There are also equivalent/better dive watches out there for less money if you can look past the fact that they don't say Rolex on the dial (which I can't). Thus, I am grabbing an Air King to hold me over.

I bought a sub date and wasn't in love. So I sold it! Bought the Omega seamaster white dial and I am completely in love. Rolex is Rolex and they are amazing but if you love watches you find the one that fills all the voids not just what's in. Definitely have a few Rolex on the list but the sub wasn't for me. P.s. the sub is beautiful and a great watch not trying to take anything away from it just wasn't the fit I wanted.

6 months ago I have Been invited by AD to get a 114060 and passed, realised I really need the date.

If they were the same price and availability I'd choose the sub by a hair. The fact that I bought this without any games for over 60% LESS than a sub it's officially off my list love this watch!

I'll take the funds I was going to use on a sub one day and put them towards a YM40 at some point which I love.

Not to hijack the thread - but I was wondering if either of you looked at the Grand Seiko SBGA229? If you did, was it too similar looking to the Sub?

I love that watch just too big at 44mm for my wrist. If they made it in 40 maybe even 42 I'd give it a go probably.

Up to a point, yes. But the GS bracelet can’t compete against the Oyster. A Sub with a spring drive would be the perfect mash-up.

If you want larger with some color, why not an SD43?

I had choice of Sub, Sub with date, SD4K, and DSSD (JC)

Sub and Sub with date - classic but couldn't deal with the squared off lugs. made the Sub look like square odd shape cushion case.

DSSD (JC) - loved the gradient dial and somewhat limited nature of the JC however, the watch is just a massive beast on small wrists. Way too top heavy and is like a dinner plate on my wrist.

SD4K was my choice...
-classic looking just like a Sub

but more importantly these are all the things that the Sub does not have
-shapely lugs
-full minute counter around the entire bezel
-4000 ft depth rating
-no cyclops makes for nice clean dial
-matte dial (instead of glossy)

Price point is hard for me to justify - close to 50% more than the Sub (in Australia - $11 vs $16). It's also a Sea Dweller and not a Sub. Although I would love the date without a cyclops!

unfortunately the Sub is the most copied diver watch aesthetic, that it has lost most of its luster.

sinking all that money for a watch that is starting to look "common" stops me from pulling the trigger.

I had a two tone sub, but sold it because it felt too flashy and I realized I wanted something a little more minimal in a way

I realized I don’t need 300m water resistance, and a glide lock

I read about the Datejust, and I became enamored with the fact that it is also a TANK but a smaller tank without crown guards

So I bought it instead and never looked back

I was 100% sold that I wanted a Sub for my 40th birthday. I ended up wanting the SD43 more as it is a bit bigger and has a splash of color. Glad I ended up with the SD43!

Walked in to buy a Sub and walked out with an Explorer. Love it. But I'm not your normal guy as my favorite Rolex is my Polar Explorer II. 5 digit of course.

I liked the 5 digit Subs back in the day but didn’t like the bracelet. I felt I was too flimsy. I like the modern 6 digit Sub bracelet but don’t like the bloated case. It always something...

Absolutely beautiful in pics. Absurdly large in person.

I bought an 116619LB and decided I didn’t need my 116610LN anymore. That and preferring SDs.

I was lucky to borrow and wear an SD4K for a couple of weeks. It became really uncomfortable. Surprising, I was glad to go back to SubC. I have considered the sd4k a few times. However, it just doesn’t sit right on my wrist.

I do agree it is undeniably a better watch in almost every aspect, but the subtle difference in thickness, makes the Sub a better daily for me.

It wears a bit thicker for everyday use and has a very long clasp. I went with the gmt2c bLack

This right here is my next watch! But I'm ditching the bracelet for a NATO or rubber one.

Had a chance to pick up a sub date from an AD last month. I passed on it.

As much as I want a sub it’s jut not special enough in light of the current situation. I’m saving the money to pick up a Patek nice the skydive from their perches.

When I finally got my hands on a ND sub in an AD passed on it and picked up a Omega SMP blue ceramic. Sub looked drab and I have a lot of dark dialed watches. The SMP adds some colour, i cant fault the quality and it was instantly available at 20% off list price.
