Going to Scotland, Advice Needed
Hello, I will be going to Scotland in early April with two of my good friends and would like to get some advice and where to go and what to do. I know we will be in Ediburgh and Dundee, one of my friends has family members in both those cities. We are mid-20's, so we are interested in possibly doing some cool outdoor type stuff. I like to flyfish so if anyone had any advice for one day trips or places to go, that would be awesome. Any other advice on cool places to go and good places to eat would be very welcome. Thanks in advance.

I am sure some Scottish people will chime in. I have vistited twice-Glasgow and Edinburgh. They were some of the best people I have EVER met in my life. Been to several European countries and Scotland ranks tops with me-except for the weather. Great people, pubs, history, national pride, football/soccer (don't bring up Rangers and Celtics)....Glasgow is more of a working class/industrial city it seems (I may be wrong) and Edinburgh was more historical/academic. Best fish and chips and mashy peas. You will have a great time.

Was in Edinburgh a few years back, it was only for a few days so I am sure others will have much better advice for you. Only thing I can tell you though go to the baked potato shop on cockburn st. Good stuff.

Forgot, the Edinburgh Castle is a must as is Queen Street for eats and shops. Also, Sterling where William Wallace (Braveheart) fought.

Weird, I didn't even see this before I started my Paris thread. Anyway, I was in Edinburgh a few years ago when I was 24 so about the same age as you and the castle there is a must see. You said you like the outdoors, so does that include golf? If so you really have to play St. Andrews while you're there. I still get chills when I think about that day. Absolute perfection.

We plan to play gold in Dundee for sure, my friends' grandfather is a member at a club there. We are going to go to St. Andrews, but I don't think we will play it because one guy in out group doesn't golf. I'm really looking forward to the trip

Advice.
1. Take some deet, those midges are little buggers. 2. Never say to a Scotsman "But really deep down, you just wish you were an Englishman." 3. Have a great time...it's a beautiful country and the people are great. J |

Captain Scotts ship Discovery in Dundee is worth a visit. As for Edinburgh, a trip to the Natural History Museam and Museum of Scotland are good. Don't bother with visiting Dynamic Earth, it's terrible. I used to live in Edinburgh and you'll find the curries some of the best in Britain. As for outdoor activities Scotland has my favourite diving in the world in St Abbs marine reserve. As for outdoors there are thousands of good walks/climbs all over the place. However, take care the weather can change in a minute on the hills. Always plan you trip and let someone know when you intend to return.

I attended prep school in Edinburgh and then Edinburgh University. Great city, but most beautiful in the summer. You'll catch some sun in June, July for days at a time. Otherwise it get's quite cloudy. There's a pub in every street literally. The common practice is to 'pub crawl' a street. That means drinking a pint at each pub on that street. Problem is, the pubs open at 430pm and last call is 1130, and it get's pretty crowded by 8pm. Start with a 6-pub street. For my 18th, we crawled a 10-pub street and I only drank 1/2 pint per pub. I was floored. PS. Don't even try the Royal Mile (street from the castle to the palace). I think that street has over 20 pubs.
So you're going to Scotland? What about Aberdeen, Aviemore, Inverness... don't get me started. In Edinburgh, take bus No. 3 or 33. Take some photos at my old pre school on Queensferry Road. You won't miss it. You'll think you're at Harry Potter's school. Good luck with the accent and don't forget to try the haggis. That's the highland animal with 2 short legs. |

It might even be too late to get a tee time, but there is an alternate's list. Trust me my man, you will look back and curse the day you didn't play St. Andrews while you were in Scotland. If at all possible play it and let your buddy who doesn't golf find a pub somewhere if he needs something to do.
