Computer protection (XP)

My internet security is almost expired so it's time to re-up. Currently I'm using Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet security but I found that this is not as complete as the previous "PC Cillin".
What I'd like to find is something that will provide a firewall, virus protection and a disk cleaner (?-window washer-?)
What are you using? What do you recommend?

I'm using AVG (virus), Commodo (firewall), SpyBot and AdAware (spyware). As you can see, these are all separate products. And, free.

I used to have MacAfee, and prefer AVG.

My new PC is running Ubuntu, I'll let you know how it runs over time. I'm impressed, especially with the boot up time.

No software firewall, but I do recommend ZoneAlarm. I do use AVG.

AVG Free to run all the time

Malwarebytes to run manually when things "just don't seem right"

I use a wireless router as my home networks firewall with a secured non-broadcasting signal.

Norton anti-virus corporate (free definitions on all computers).

That's all.

I am not a fan of having too many things running in the background... tends to use up memory and slow your computer down.

Bill i think its about time to upgrade your OS...Microsoft is no longer making XP..they cancelled it already and no longer will continue.. so you will have a hard time updating certain programs....there will a new Micosoft OS coming out..its called Windows 7..it will replace windows Vista...For Virus protection CA is a good brand and Kapersky..

I have moved on from PC, but before i left PC I had 538,000 infections on my computer which was a Compq N800C. It was running XP and I did McCafee, AVG, all the free ones. In retrospect, all I needed to do was backup my homework documents on a jump drive and do a complete system restore.Problem solved. I tried Limewire and got 38,000 infections from some downloads. I purchased Vista Home basic and that cleared everything.Problem solved. Moved on to a Mac and Never looked back.

"I tried Limewire and got 38,000 infections from some downloads."

BINGO!

P2P file sharing is just asking for trouble on a PC. Can't tell you how many PC's I've cleaned up because of this.

BTW, if a machine is really infected with rootkits and other major nasties, the best way I have found to clean them up is to pull the hard drive and mount it on a test machine as a secondary drive then run about 8 different anti virus/spyware/ malware programs on it. I've had a 95% success ratio cleaning them up this way. About the only thing that I can't fix with this setup is a severely corrupt registry and missing / corrupt registry backups.

I use Avast for antivirus. Virus writers have standard remedies for usual antivirus vendors such as TrendMicro, Norton and McAfee.

Actually Microsoft still makes XP available through manufacturers and they are still producing service packs. If you were to buy a Dell from the business line, you can get XP SP3. That's what we order for our clients because we strongly discourage using Vista.

MS will still support XP for many years to come. So I don't quite understand your comment about having a hard time updating certain programs. Most software companies are still producing software for XP since it is such a large base.

XP is still one of the best MS OS, so there's no reason to upgrade to Vista. Windows 7 will not come out for at least another year.

You can't get much better than that, for free.

Agreed. XP is not going anywhere. In many business operations, including my own, we are required to use XP. It will be around and supported by MS for many years down the road.

All these new versions of Windowns are a scam anyway.... Keeps MS selling new windows software and requiring beefier hardware to use it. Then it requires years of updates to make the new 'better' windows fast and stable. XP just got there after service pack SP2.

and then buy the program. It truly is one of the best Anti-Virus Programs out there today. I went to the malware site, as I had a nasty virus, and they recommended this software which fixed my issues.

Haaa, that is funny. For home use the Mac has been so much easier. PC still the way to go for companies it seems.
