O hell NO. That sounds worse to me than renting a TV or furniture. That amount could also be a monthly CC payment to own one. Maybe someone out there would want one for a month or two though, what do I know, I guess you can do that for a Supercar as well.

Leasing an asset that is largely non-depreciating seems like the definition of throwing money away to me.

If you can buy the watch, wear it for 3 months, then sell it and get +/- 100% of your money back, the only reason to do this is lack of up front capital/easier entry into the game...and if that applies to you, it likely means you shouldn't be entertaining the idea yet, anyway.

Seems to me that someone who wants to rent one might just buy a replica instead.

I would rent a watch to wear it for a bit in order to decide if I want to purchase it and add to the permanent collection. Trying on for only a couple mins at the AD may not always be ideal. A lot of members here have been asking for a way to try on models that may not be readily available at their local AD.

How would renting differ from the many who put it on credit card, then pay monthly for it?

Well it’s not even a loan - the Rolex would never be repossessed since the CC debt isn’t secured.

It operates just like a rental - monthly payments while you wear the Rolex.

I guess the key difference between rent and paying off a watch on a CC is that you own it at the end.

If it was cheap I would rent a watch before buying one.

Like a Speedmaster for example.

I like them but the size worries me.

So if I could wear one for a week, for $200 to test it out, I would

That makes sense to me. Or a Daytona if you are worried about how legible it might be. I can see a lot of Instagram influencers doing this.

This. With the best will in the world, trying the watch on for 2 mins at the AD is not always enough to realise if you like it enough.

Let’s face it, this is targeted at the insufferable Instagram crowd. You know, the type that rents a jet for an hour so they can do photo shoots but never leave the ground. The type that poses for photos in front of somebody else’s lambo.

Basically, it’s largely for people that can’t afford to buy. Those talking about using as a test before buying will be in the minority (I actually think it’s quite a good idea).

Luxury accessory rentals targeted at women have been a thing for quite a while now. Think Hermès Birkin and Kelly handbags; Louboutin shoes etc etc. Flaunt it even if you haven’t got it.

So this is the male, luxury watch version of that. I imagine, it will be popular with the Instagram posers or “influencers” as they like to call themselves.
