Black Dial OP39 AD Availability (Waitlist?)

I have to admit, this watch is really growing on me. I really like the Explorer, but there are qualities that the OP39 has that I really admire. I do prefer the stick hands as well as the applied Crown Logo. Overall, I just like the simplicity of it and how understated it is.

I almost pulled the trigger on a used one from Bernard a couple of days ago, but I really want to experience buying a new Rolex from an actual dealer.

Considering the OP39 isn't considered a Sports Model, would this watch be overly difficult to source from an AD without a waitlist? I have read that this model is available for order from many AD's?

I think you should be able to get one if you look around!! Can't imagine the insanity has gotten far enough for OP39s to be totally unavailable...

My guess is that an AD would be able to get you a black dial OP 39 either immediately or within a few weeks time.

I am completely new to this, so take my experience with a grain of salt.

I inquired at a few ADs recently about the OP39 with a white dual and was met with similar responses from all of them. They all said that, because of COVID-19, their inventory was quite depleted and that they didn’t foresee receiving an OP39 within the next 4-6 months. Granted, I do not have a history with either AD, so I could definitely be being taken for a ride, but just wanted to share my experience because I was in the same boat.

Go to the nearest AD and ask. Don’t call, go in person. Let them know you’re willing to buy one if they can source one. IF they don’t have one in back they should be able to get one soon. If they give you some years long wait list crap to try and sell you something in the display case, go to the next nearest AD, and so on

I tried to get one... black dial 116000 Arabic dial (basically a 36mm Explorer with batton hands) - could not get hold of one for the life of me.

Recommend looking outside of LA. Think a smaller AD should be able to source one once inventory of the non-hot models normalizes with the factory back up and running.

I was in the same position as you last year. I was waiting for an Explorer 1 as a lower-key everyday watch. I got the call for the Explorer 1, and while I was there, they happened to have a black OP39 in the case. I left with the OP39. The white and black dial OP39s are just perfectly executed, better looking than the other colorways since the indices are all evenly sized and they do not have the additional colored pips around the dial. I think the black OP39 can do everything the Explorer can do, but can also be dressed up or worn with business attire better.

To your question around availability - my AD does not have any white or black in stock, they have become allocation pieces. I think I was one of the last buyers to be able to buy one out of the case. However, my AD does take deposits on them, which ensure you get one quite a bit quicker (they said they only take deposits on OPs and select DJs, never on the sports models). So, you can try calling around and asking about that angle.

I'll be looking in NE Ohio the end of June. I'm going to probably do deposit thing (I'm going to call Ohio, Pittsburgh, and Detroit ADs first) if one isn't in stock. I want a white dial OP 39. Did they indicate a wait time.

No, but if they are taking depots at my AD, I am guessing you can get one within a month or two. This is in MN, which I would guess is similar allocation to Ohio?

My AD in Virginia said there was a wait list and that I would have to wait a 3-4 months for a OP39. Crazy times!

Yeah, I’ve decided I want a black dial OP39 too. Called/emailed three dealers and got on their lists for one, two wouldn’t even estimate a time and one said a year. Of those I have a purchase history with two and the third my brother does and I used his point of contact.

I’m astonished these are getting so hard to get. Do not dismiss the white dial. My buddy has one and it’s a stunner.

I spoke with the AD nearest to my house, the Sales Associate took my information and told me the OP39 Black and the Explorer aren’t that much of a tall order, and they should be able to secure one for me by my Birthday in October, they took my info, and she texted me as well. We shall see.

Yeah, I’m actually on for black or white at two of the ADs, black is my first choice but white is a close second!

Some, a few, just a handful, a tiny minority (hoping not to offend) on this forum think that the OP - being the "entry level" Rolex - is easy to get and dismiss it because it's not a "hot" model - so must be widely available.

However, the average punter on the street loves the OP, it's a classic watch, and timeless in design and elegance. They are in high demand from those who aren't watch enthusiasts - because despite the social media boom for Rolex SS, the average person wants a quality watch and doesn't want to flex - the OP is perfect in this regard.

I travelled around Asia and Europe in February this year looking for an OP and found a Rhodium OP 39mm in the middle of Finland thanks to a fellow member here on the forums. Middle of Finland! I had to wait for it, and it was a combination of luck, location, and timing that I got it at all. In all of my other visits to ADs in Asia and Europe - not a single one had any 39mm OP's.

I asked my AD about an OP39 on behalf of a friend of mine the other month. They told me that they haven't a black dial for a few months, and that there is a wait-list however it shouldn't take too long to get (compared to some other models). I would be surprised if you found one on display.

OP39 white or black dial are not displayed in case anymore.
