I would say Rolex professional watches fall in same category as Land Rover Defender. A great 'tool' but mostly used as a luxury vehicle/watch.

Everyone has an opinion! My Sub is a watch. I don't grab my cell to see what time it is!
I look at my wrist and smile. I wear my Sub with a suit and tie, i wear my Sub in shorts and a tee, when i mow a lawn, cut a tree down, dig a hole, shopping, cruising in my convertible, i wear my sub when i am at the lake riding my jetski, i wear it everywhere, and smile every time i look at my wrist. And my Rolex looks great!
Tool or jewelry, it aint gonna sit in a box or in the safe and i dream about wearing it somewhere, i wear it now, like it was suppose to be...everyone needs to wise up and wear that beautiful thing...

But seriously, I think its up to the user whether to use it as a tool or just jewelry, they are so well made to both specifications which is what is probably so amazing about them. For instance, I got my Submariner as a 20 year old, which is a very young age. As a very active person, as soon as it got some scratches, I was like "I wonder how much this thing can take?" So I used it swimming, hiking and even doing house renovations, all kinds of adventures. It got scratched to hell. Then after 20 years of wearing I had it serviced when it finally stopped keeping time well. It came back looking brand new, although I replaced the bezel insert, etc. Now I baby it like an unborn fetus, and it works great as jewelry. The best time is Rolex time, whether it be in the board room, ball room or building a room. Cheers.

The “I wonder how much this thing can take” is the mentality that I am on right now

I just feel like a paid so much for the watch that I better get my money’s worth hahaha

Now there are many other alternatives for these pursuits.

Rolex has done little to change their formula for building watches for these purposes but they are no longer a bit more expensive than the other alternatives. They are exhorbitently priced so much so that they will perform the function but aren't sold mainly for that. They're sold as jewelry. They work as tool watches but they're much more jewel watches. Very few who pursue endeavors requiring tool watches will go for a Rolex as their first choice unless they're trying to impress by showing off how wealthy they are. They are over priced and there are more capable choices for orders of magnitude less cost.
Excellent post.

The watch was just purchased 8 days ago. It does not leave my wrist though. So yes. It will be present next dive and all subsequent dives unless it’s being serviced or replaced.

Are Rolex a tool watch manufacture ?

It’s 2020

There are real tools available priced 5 - 10% the cost of the corresponding Rolex, are much more accurate, and have better utility than a mechanical analog watch.

That being said, they are robust passion assets that can take a beating and would serve well as a basic backup.

So instead buy a dive computer that becomes obsolete and needs replaced every few years and spend the same amount over 20-30 yrs or enjoy your mechanical watch, know your calcs for bottom time and deco stops and rely on your brain instead of technology all the while enjoying your spectacular watch that is recognizable the world over for quality, distinction and success.

I get that. I’ve owned g shocks when I was young because it’s the nicest thing I could afford. I’m going to compromise and say a watch is what you purchase it for (no matter the price). If you pay 10k for a submariner and you daily it and you actually put it through it’s paces it’s a tool watch. If you buy one to wear to dinner once a week then it’s certainly not. The same can be said for the person that spends $120 on a Casio but only wears that on special occasions because then THAT g shock or tool watch is clearly not.

A Suunto Zoop costs ~$200 from an eBay dive shop. You would have to replace it 45 times to get to what a Submariner costs before taxes.

Not to mention the interval service cost of a Rolex is equivalent to 3 - 5 brand new Zoops each time depending on the service estimate.

And if you want something electronic on your wrist and trust it with your life then by all means buy one. I own several dive computers. Sunnto’s , Oceanic’s and a Hollis. One of my Oceanic’s has a junk bracelet that is not even a part yet they still sell it new today. All will be shelved now because I decided to squeeze the trigger on my sub. (Call me old fashioned) but I am more prone to trusting mechanical things than electronic. To each their own.

I also believe you misinterpreted my post. I was simply stating electronic items become obsolete. You always need to purchase the newer updated version because of incompatibility issues or worse. One Zoop may last you 20 yrs. I don’t know many divers that would trust a 20 yr old dive computer over a 20 yr old Rolex and their knowledge.

Please note, it’s 43.18 not 45. I guess it depends on where you bought though.

Tools need to have affordability and redundancy taken into account. Zoops are definitely more of a tool than a rolex dive sub.

Hell when I go camping, I use a Gshock because it is disposable and cheap to replace. I could have over a lifetime supply of Gshocks for 1 Rolex, and I can have multiple pieces to reduce the probability of a single point of failure.

That said, I love my no date sub and GMT master II, and yes I can/do take them out for acitivities. And buy activities I mean swimming, playing with the dog, jogging, and daily basic acitivities. I think they would survive a camping trip easily, but why risk it?

I’m not knocking you or anyone else on this forum that has that position on their watches. If it makes you happy to preserve it as best you can, more power to you!! I didn’t spend that much money on a watch I wasn’t going to use so yes for me it IS a tool. A specialized tool to add to the vast amount I have in my shop and garage. The difference is my watch is a tool I can wear proudly every day knowing every drip of blood and every tear that got me to where I was comfortable enough to purchase it. I’d get looked at like a crazy person dragging snap on tools and other machinery behind me everywhere I went.

No matter if a GShock costs $50 or $200, A GShock is far more capable than any Rolex as a tool.

That’s why I have a g shock I bought I’m 2005. But haven’t worn it in 10 yrs. Again, I will explicitly say “to each their own”. Neither is more capable than the other, it’s all variable to the owners opinion.

It is all in the mind of the buyer. I literally destroyed a 16610 over 20 years of adventures with it and now I wear a JC Deepsea everywhere.last Saturday I went camping and slept in a tent and trashed the watch together with the other stuff insìde the tent. It will get scratched? Yes. Are those scratches going to remember good moments? Hell yes.

I suppose it depends on your definition of tool watch. In my opinion, though, Rolex watches have evolved into rather lovely wrist jewellery.
