Any pics of White Exp II sans cyclops
OK
I know this has been a thread before but I searched and could not find it.... Does anyone have any pics? I have seen the pic of the black on but would really like to see the white if anyone has done it. I really liked the clean sans cyclops face of my SD and would really consider getting a second crystal and taking the cyclops off to put on the Exp II but I wonder if it wont look as distinct due to the white date ring and white face (vd sd white and black)

I love it, definitely shows the beautiful dial much better since there's no obstruction from the cyclops lens. A black dial without the cyclops looks great too.

Looks good!
I may have to go that route! What a comfortable watch! But I think every Rolex I have ever owned has been comfortable (from DJ to DSSD) Now to just find a genuine Rolex crystal for it and let it soak in acetone I think someone posted before....

I think the explorer II would look the best without a date. Where are the master photoshoppers?

X2! There's just something that looks wonky without the cyclops, like it lost a little of its soul or something.

It was the stunning black dial/white markers of the SDD that switched me from the white to black EXPII sans "bubble":

I'm liking the white sans-cyclops a lot.
I'm also curious as to what it would look like without any writing at all (ie no "Rolex", "Oyster Perpetual Date", "Explorer II", "Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified" or "swiss made"). Anyone want to try a photoshop to see? In my head, I think I would like the purity of a completely clean dial. I suppose this would be the equivalent of de-badging a car, leaving just the beauty and lines of the design behind. I know the purists will frown on this but, like with the cyclops, I would do it via a replacement dial so that it could be easily reversed. Also, is this a practical thing to be able to do? Could the words be removed without leaving a mark, or could the whole dial be re-enamelled? |

okay - so now this thought is lodged in my head and I had to play around and see what it would look like.
What do you think? (apologies for the crude work - I only have Paint) |

That looks fantastic - but I would have left just the Rolex crown on the dial, and 'Swiss Made'
Great effect Well there was no Exp II change/update this year, so we might as well create a few of our own Cheers

It might be true if done to a submariner (also because it is a highly copied design in general) but the Explorer II is so distinctive that I don't think it could be mistaken for anything else apart from a fake Explorer II. Like the Panerai 1936, I don't think any embellishment is needed - the design and quality stands up on its own. The brand is there as a reassurance of the quality but if the quality, or design, stands on its own merits then I consider it superfluous. If you already appreciate that then it's really there to reassure others of the fact that it's the real deal. For me, Mont Blanc pens have beautiful proportions and instantly recognisable as an item of quality (okay, I admit that the snowy crown also doubles as a logo) would be just as identifiable without the name stamped around the gold band. Rolexes do serve a second function as jewellery, since many cheaper watches tell the time just as accurately. To that end, I know that part of the pleasure of ownership is showing others that you have one. So I can certainly understand an opposing view. Beyond that though, I also like my things to have a custom quality - knowing that they are unique in some respect (you want to see my bike for an example of that!), especially if you have gone to some extra effort to achieve that. Because of this, I understand why some people would choose a Pro-Hunter (even if they are not for me) for its exclusivity and being slightly different. I'm not sure how I would feel about it if Rolex offered a no-cost option to have a dial without the words although I think the aesthetics would still win the day for me. Well, that's my thoughts on the matter. Does anybody else have a view on this? |

A Rolex without the cyclops is like looking at the front or rear end of a Mercedes-Benz without its 3-pointed star.
End of story!!
