16800 Purchase Potential
Hi all,
I started a thread previously for purchasing a 16800 and was steered off of it due to the soul being taken from the watch with a service dial, hands and bezel paired with over polishing. I've since come across this and just want to see what the pros on here think regarding the hands/dial on this watch. To me, they look fine and I'm excited to have found this. However, you might think differently. Thank you in advance! AA |

Just a personal preference, but I prefer the matte-dial transitional 16800s.
That ^ looks fine though. |

Tough to tell from those photos but the case looks okay. The dial looks like it’s turning to matte but appears to have spotting and drag marks. I would look close at the dial for damage if I was a buyer.

How can there be drag marks on a gold surround dial? How could the hands possibly touch the dial’s surface?

The hour hand can leave drag marks if not properly adjusted as well as the back part of the seconds hand.

I know that. The drag marks on this watch are where the minute hand goes OVER the markers. How can it touch the dial surface there, between the raised white gold surround markers?

Maybe it is "skipping" over the markers every time the hand hits it.

My point really was that the dial appears to be damaged. Do you have another explanation for the circular marks on the dial? |

I let the birthyear concept go to find a prettier watch - nothing good in 1989/1990; maybe you can go older too :-) My 1983 1680 |

It’s a 16800 (sorry I had a typo earlier *1680 -> 16800). 16800s already come with sapphire crystals, and for this one the cyclops was taken off - it’s still the OEM crystal. It’s easy to take the cyclops off on 5 digit models. |

I have an 82 16800 with the matte dial. The non matte dials kicked in somewhere around 1985 by my understanding. Inthe 8.5M serial number range.

Thanks all for your input - I ended up buying a watch from the forum here and it arrived today. Shout out to KRLYUZH @ Lunar Oyster. Crazy quick delivery and item is exactly as described.

Congrats! Awesome macro detail on the sponge action there haha.
I recently got a 168000 where I made sure that it had the original tritium hands and dial, but once I got it I realized that the bezel insert had been replaced. Currently on the hunt for a tritium bezel insert.. |

Love a 16800!
Out of curiosity, and not to make a fuss, but I saw the sale ad for that, but don't remember seeing any pics that show the bubbling on the dia. Totally fine if you like it, but I'd certainly want to know that going in. |
