Ok kids, an update:

Well, went to the AD today. When he greeted me, he said a salesperson sold the SDDS. He apologized, said he should have pulled it from the showcase (well, whatever). He did remove the Milgauss and the Daytona never was in the showcase. He said that he has another SDDS on order, and he expects it within 7-10 days.

He said the best he could do on the three is $20,500. I told him I really wanted to get it to be $20K out the door.

I told him I would call him tomorrow and let him know. I think I'm still sticking to the $20,000. I know it may seem petty to some, but if it is petty for me to want the $500 off, it's also petty for him to kill the deal over $500.00.

In any event, we agreed that if we make the deal, I would pick up all three at the same time, which he agreed. I figure that would give him the incentive not to sell any other one out from under me, while I am waiting for the SDDS to come in.

So that's where it stands. Looks like I'm not going to have the watches for another week or so. Good news for the life of this thread. It will keep going a while more.

Let's hear it: I'm sure there are comments readyt o be posted!

Thanks for your indulgence.

I think that $20,500 is an incredible deal for those three watches. That is out the door including tax?

I think if you play hardball he'll go for 20k. Like you said, $500 isn't a deal breaker for either of you and you have the upper hand in the deal.

I thought you said you'd pick up the watches at the same time? How will you pick them up if he is shipping them out of state?

Think about it, who needs who more? He'll go for the $20k. Next time you talk to him, or go in there just let him know that. Don't let it drag out any further, let the next time you two talk be the last time the deal is discussed, with you either having 3 watches or still having $20k in the bank. Tell him for $20k out the door its a deal, if he cant do it for that then its fine by you. Put a little pressure on him, he'll cave.

He owes you at least $500 for selling you out on the Deep Sea! I know he's getting you another one, but definitely stick to your guns.

At my local AD, there's been a Deepsea sitting in the display case for at least 3 weeks that I know of, possibly longer. Just put the ball in his court next time you go in, and make sure and do that. I wouldnt call or email; I would go in and look at the watches 1 more time and tell him the $20k offer is on the table until you walk out the door, then the deal is off. See what happens. Ill bet my new Breitling youll get the deal

It must have been a let down when he told you the DSSD had been sold. I'd be annoyed. I do think he will meet you at $20k. But if he doesn't, I would still take the watches at 20.5. That's just me. That's still a killer deal and nothing to sneeze at.

After some reflection, I decided that the sales tax will be paid on this transaction. It's the right thing to do. I don't want any bad karma!

I don't see how saving yourself $800 could be bad?

It's $1,600, and it would be tax evasion. Not going to do it. If I can afford these watches, and I can afford to pay my fair share of taxes. I really don't know what I was even thinking. I got caught up in the deal I guess.

He's a lawyer. He has to be careful about stuff like that. $1600 - not worth the headache if someone creates a stink.

Honestly Jeannie, it's not worth it to anyone. If a buyer can't pay the sales tax thats due, then they shouldn't be making the purchase. Period.

So my response to the AD will be, I'll pay the sales tax, thank you. But sell it to me for $20K (plus tax).

Brian,

Glad everything went well at the AD except him selling the DSSD, which is kind of shady of him, when he offered it to you first. At least he has one on order for you.

Don't you dare pay him the sales tax. At this point it's just the principle. Like I told you earlier, all he needs to do is ship the empty boxes out of state. It' a common practice among watch dealers. As far as a liability goes, it's his to collect it, not yours to pay it. If he's willing to ship and waive the taxes, you have no responsibility. It all goes back to him for not collecting tax. I know you think you're doing the "right thing", but you youself said that you work very hard to make $1000, and in this case, you'd be throwing away $1600.

You should really study up on tax use laws.

It is absolutely, without a doubt, on the buyer to pay those taxes.

I'd like to know at what price he sold the SDDS.

If he sold it at better than what he originally figured in the deal, he might now have a stronger bargaining position.

Think about it. The SDDS is known to sit in windows for weeks at a time without even the slightest interest. If he just sold it at even a reasonable profit, let's say 15-20% under MSRP, then the bargaining position is considerably weakened, because that's the watch on which he was likely going to give the most margin.

I think $20,000 out the door, after tax, is going to be a hard sell at this point.

I can understand the AD selling the DSSD. Think about it, if you were sitting there needing to move things, you couldnt pass up on a solid offer because you offered it to someone who is thinking on it. What if you decided not to take it? He missed a sale and has to sit with it longer. That said, nothing at all with you wanting to think on it, especially with a $20k purchase. You just have to look at it from his point of view, he's looking for whats in his best interest. He'll make it right by offering you the very next one. Just stick to your guns on the $20k, he'll do it. Put the pressure on him. He's had those watches for longer than normal, so he needs the cash flow. Just let the negotiations come to an end, go in the next time and let the attitude be $20k take it or leave it, if I walk out of here without the watches today Im no longer interested; so do we have a deal? Watch and see, youll be walking out with 3 fantastic watches

Good luck. $20k + tax is still a fantastic deal!! The DSSD is an awesome watch!

Old stick in the mud Jimbo pops up...

What happens if somebody else comes into the AD and asks for a GV or Cos and wants to pay full retail? Will the Ad sell them?

It's the principles of selling.

This was a packaged deal and if one watch couldn't be replaced, it can throw off the deal. The AD is lucky he can get another DSSD but what if it was the Daytona he sold.

What the AD should have done was told the customer that the DSSD was pending and get the customer's info. If the deal didn't go through then he will get the call.

The sales mamanger (who I have been dealing with) said that another salesperson sold the SDDS by mistake. That's why he removed the Malgauss from the display case and kept the Daytona in the back.
