Does Anyone Have a One Rolex Collection and it's not a Sub?

You know what they say, beware the man with only one watch, he probably knows you are late.

Anyhow, I know many people get a Sub an are done with the brand, but I'm interested in hearing from those that have only one Rolex with no plan to get another and chose something other than everyone's favorite diver.
  • Why choose something other than the icon?
  • Is it your every day watch?
  • Any plans to "pass it on" to the next generation?
  • Did you get it to scratch the Rolex itch and just lost interest in the brand after joining the crown club?

Before I fell into the rabbit hole, I used to have a 1-rolex collection for approx 3 years.

I had a Datejust 116234 - oyster band, white dial, stick batons, fluted bezel. I tried to cover a lot of ground with; oyster band for sport, fluted bezel for flash, stick batons & white for neutral.

I had a good run with it, but once I got the itch for a sub my DJ became a little too middle of the road for me. I’ve subsequently traded it in for a TT everose DJ, and have built up my collection with a hulk, speedmaster & old explorer ii

Edit: I will say a turning point was when I realized that I could rock a Sub. I have small wrists so always thought that I didn’t have the real estate for it, but I borrowed a friends Sub for a couple days and then my world changed haha.

I think a lot of people own only a GMT or Explorer II- the GMT complication in addition to date would be reason enough to get one of those over a Sub if you felt so inclined...not to mention the fact that everyone has a black Sub. Some people fall more into the classic mode than sport, and will have only a DJ/OP or even an Explorer- that would make sense for someone less sport-driven in their style.

I personally fall into the first camp- had a Explorer II as only Rolex for quite some time...then I found a YM that I've loved since circa 2000 and added that about 2 weeks after the Explorer II. The YM fills the Sub niche while being a bit more than run of the mill, and the Explorer II has the GMT complication for travel, so each has a place.

I can see plenty of reasons to only have/need/want 1 Rolex...but I can think of ways to justify 3-6 pretty easily, as well!

Within my collection, I only have a Batman. Never previously thought of myself as a ‘Rolex guy” but that one really spoke to me in person. Generally prefer other brands, e.g., AP, JLC and ALS. I’m open to some, but not really chasing any, if that makes sense.

Some of the precious metal Daytonas look good to me, but I’ve never had much luck with rubber bracelets (sweaty / uncomfortable). So for now sort of keep an eye out, but no real plans.

I am down to a single 16710 that ive owned for 16 yrs. Its like a sub but with 3 bezel options, two bracelet options and one more complication.

Also growing up i was totally sold on the gmt advertising in nat geo magazines. Since ive grown up, marketing has had less of an influence on my buying choices

GMT looks better than a sub

That is why

But later i had a hulk, and love that watch too

White daytona is ok, but looks better on PICS, than in real life

I have yet to se a black dial one, maybe that changes my mind

I had only a Daytona 116520 for about ten years before adding a Pepsi this year. Wore that thing everyday. Still my favorite watch.

Wouldn’t mind upgrading someday to a 228239. I could definitely live with that as my one and only.

So many in Asian counties prefer Datejust over Sub and DJ is as big an icon if not bigger. US is more prone to sports watches hype but its not the same all over the world!

When I decided that it was time to get my first Rolex “a couple of years ago” I had two models in mind. The DJ41 and BLNR.
Didn’t like how small they looked on me so I started looking at bigger models until the SD43 landed on my wrist. My search stopped there.

Yeah, great point. Whenever I look at IG posts of Rolex’s in APAC markets, all I see are the DJs. Perhaps it has something to do with wrist sizes and DJ being more suitable for people of stature in APAC.

Nothing to do wrist size. Rolex is mostly party wear watch and they have huge formal celebrations and folks don't wear sports watches in luxury events. All DJ, fluted, gold DJs etc are really hot for that events unlike Sub or Explorer II type of watches.

Could easily see this being my DJII with fluted bezel on oyster. Size makes it sporty, but still has that classic look

I wore the Polar Explorer II as my daily for about a year, then switched to a Hulk and it's been my one and only Rolex ever since.

Only one. Pre-hype BLNR, was worn almost daily (until started working from home). Acquired for multi-timezone tracking purposes. Two-color bezel easy to tell day/night at a glance vs all-black LN.

I wore a GMT 16710 (Coke) for 10 years before I bought a second watch, which was a Speedmaster.

Although I collected other watches, I wore the Coke 90% of the time for over 20 years.

Now the GMT 116710 LN is my primary watch (even though I have a number of other watches including a Sub, Daytona, Explorer 2, APRO, and others).

I think the GMT is the best watch Rolex makes.

I have just one Rolex, and it’s the 42mm white gold Yachtmaster. I did have a ceramic sub several years ago, but couldn’t get-on with the thick lugs and ‘blocky’ case. I found it pretty ugly.
The new version is an improvement; not before time. But I will stick with the Yachtmaster. I probably won’t ever buy another Rolex. Nice as they are. Had lots in the past, but that’s done. Good company though.

I bought my first Rolex in 2016 and back then had the choice between an LN GMT and a Hulk. Both were in the store and I just couldn't choose the Hulk over the GMT due to the extra complication and a little thinner.

Sometimes I think I should have got the Hulk, but then I love how easy it is to wear the GMT as green can be a bit difficult I am sure.

I landed up selling the GMT to add funds for an Aquanaut, then a few months after selling, got the opportunity right after discontinuation to buy the last one from my AD, so I bought the same Rolex again :D

Glad I did as I enjoy having a Rolex in the stable and having tried since, I cannot add another s they are just unobtainable.

But for now I will just enjoy having my current small collection while "waiting" for a white Daytona and Pepsi GMT.

I will say that I have found the price of the DJ41 to be a little crazy after the last price increase last year.

My one Rolex was a Rolesor Daytona... but then I bought a sub
