Insurance that is not Jewlers Mutual

So oddly Jewlers Mutual refuses to ensure my recently purchased root beer. Their refusal letter says it is due to “the nature of my item” and my credit (which is bullshit since I have perfect credit).

I know most people add their watches to their homeowners policy but I rent so that’s not an option.

What other options are out there?

Renters insurance, although I’m not entirely sure how it works.

I agree with the above. I would look into a renter’s policy. They’re typically very affordable so the premiums may not be too bad for jewelry as an add on.

Look into a "Personal Articles Policy" from a homeowners insurance co. even if you rent. That is where I would start.

Chubb Insurance offers an individualized policy for valuable articles coverage. They are considered a top name for such coverage.

You might be able to add it to your insurance company that you use for your vehicle. Depending on which company you use

If you’re a Veteran, you can look into USAA.

Insurance that is not Jewlers Mutual

State Farm is who I use. I added my watch (personal articles) policy to my current auto policies. It added $10 a month and covers whether lost, stolen or damaged beyond repair anywhere in the world. Just had to send pics of serial number and receipt of purchase. If watch goes up in value I need to get an appraisal for the newer value. The addition actually lowered my rate with them monthly for whatever reason.

I wish my quote from State Farm was only $10/mo.

The insurance is only for one watch under 10k so I’d probably like to have your collection!

Separate policy on home owners with Nationwide Private Client. About 1.3% premium on actual value (currently replacement even if more than retail) and anywhere in the world for any loss.

Im going to say that JM is terrible. My friend had made a claim after his home was robbed and he was never paid. Read all of their yelp reviews!

Going to look at Chubb and Lavalier this weekend. I’m in NYC with no vehicle (nor do I really care to get renters insurance) so a dedicated valuables policy seems to be the play, at least until that changes.

So the update here is that Lavalier also denied me saying something similar to JM. Their cited reason was “the nature of the jewelry schedule.” I called a Chubb agent and they said they can’t write a valuables policy that is t attached to some other policy, she said the reason I’m getting denied is that it’s only one watch and that JM and lavalier like to insure collections as the higher premium offsets their risk.

I did get a quote from the “Specialty” division of JM, they said they could cover it for $550 a year plus a 1k deductible but that seems very very very high to me given the coverage is 16k.

For those saying homeowners policy I currently rent and don’t have renters insurance so I would like like to find a reasonable valuables policy if at all possible.

What would TRF do?

I always recommend renters insurance. I’m not sure how old you are but when I was in my 20s renting, it was like $19/mo.
