Anyone break a hip?
I just did. I had a bicycle crash and really got messed up. Broke my hip and broke my elbow (radial head fracture), both on my left side. 3 screws are holding my hip together now. My new wheels are a walker with an arm platform for at least the next 30 days. I feel like I am totally depend on someone else right now. Thankfully, my wife is a nurse.
I just bought a new Vespa GTS 300 three weeks ago to go with my Triumph Bonneville. No riding anytime soon. Or, anything else for that matter. I just turned 65 BTW. Sucks. Anyone else gone down this road? How long till full recovery? |

I did about 6 years have a nasty crash on a set of RR tracks that cost me a fractured hip but lucked out of no screws plates as it healed on its own but I was with a walker for about 2 months and had a hell of a time going up and down steps, so I did it setting on my rear and doing it.. Showers will be tough at first.. I am 66 1/2 now and have quite healthy bones or just been lucky... 7DD36C6D-DBBD-45E5-B83F-0B5BC46DE99B.jpeg 9745FC47-E65A-43E9-AA90-ACC7EF0F1C0C.jpeg 23992DB0-099B-4ED1-B24B-E5910B46C015.jpeg DB32F7DF-6120-4CAC-BC37-D1C11DE6F302.jpeg |

Good you are tough!
The wreck is terrible. My S-I-L is over 70 and rides bicycle every week, trails and paths, not roads. She said HER bone density is negative (3 test[ed] points), instead of positive numbers...currently doctoring for "the magic pill." You'll heal fast. Take activity level just to "the breaking point," pun intended. You'll know when to curtail your self-inflicted/directed "home therapy." You're body will tell you when. Been there...ankle triple fracture, not hip. Think happy thoughts, it will all be behind you both/all shortly.

Care to share what and how your accident happen..? I hope you heal quickly and fully as soon as possible.. Not preaching but tons or raw leafy greens and calcium goes along ways in stronger bones as we get older... I was very very lucky mine was not any worse as I was traveling at a high rate of speed 20+ (for me anyways)..

Anyone break a hip?
Quote:
Sorry to hear that OP. Wish you a speedy and complete recovery. While on a bike ride, broke my hip, technically the femur going into the hip joint last November. Was operated and have 2 surgical rods, going into the hip, plates and screws to hold it together. These will stay permanently. I’ve now recovered to the extent of being back on the bike, running every day and being mobile just like before. I did have my physio impacted due to the covid caused lockdowns and that’s not advisable at all so complete recovery to rebuild muscle will take time. Back in physio now and expect that to continue for rest of year. Only advise I would give is to try and get moving again as soon as you can. It will be painful but can be managed. All the best and sending good vibes.

A 59 yo mate of mine recently did a backflip off his verandah 4 metres from the ground and landed on the concrete driveway. Drove his femur up into the Pelvis smashing it pretty comprehensively so he is now full of metal. (also broke several ribs and the Humerus and dislocated all his metatarsals which were poking through the skin)
The 'silver-lining' however was that he did not injure his head or spine. So whilst sympathizing with your nasty crash, like my mate, you were fortunate to avoid injury to the really tricky bits. Best wishes for recovery.

Thanks for all the well wishes.
The accident was totally my fault. I was on my hybrid electric bicycle, doing around 18 mph transitioning from the road, across a grass area to a sidewalk to get out of the way of traffic. The sidewalk was new and had a tall, sharp edge that I could not see because of tall grass. My front tire didn't agree with the tall edge and caught the edge and just instantly through me off the bike and onto the hard sidewalk. Luckily, my head landed on the other side of the pavement and never hit anything hard. However, my whole left side took a beating. |

Wasn’t my hip, but I shattered my T1 Vertebrate and cracked my skull open in 2 places requiring some staples and stitches back in March. They said 3 months for the fracture to heal, but I still have constant pain most days and it’s extra bad after a long day of physical activity. But the more I’ve been working out, the less it hurts.

Ouch, I've had my share of injuries but no broke hip (yet). Wish you a speedy recovery, glad you have a nurse on hand!
On a funny note, I saw breguetrolex's pictures and thought he was the OP at first. I remember he recently posted about his accident and thought this was another crash. I was like, damn, this dude needs to stay off a bike LOL |

Wow, wishing you a fast recovery. I never broke a hip, but my mother did when she was 84 and recovered completely very quickly, so I am hopeful for you. If you want to know about a broken ankle, ruptured Achilles, cracked sternum or numerous other injuries I’m your man.

Good luck in your healing, OP.
I've never broken a hip and I hope I never do. I've broken my fibula, my tibia, and my nose in three different incidents, not including including a rhinoplasty to repair the deviated septum that resulted from the initial broken nose. Most people don't think a broken nose is a big deal, but I nearly bled to death as a result of mine and spent a good while in the hospital recovering. It was quite a blow to the head. I was transfused four pints of blood. Then later, there was the surgery to repair the damage. I broke my tibia when I was forty and spent four months in two different casts. I was hit by a car while walking home from work and was lucky to have not been killed outright. The fibula was broken in boot camp and was a stress fracture. They just put an ace bandage on the leg and gave me a set of crutches and four weeks of light duty in Casual Platoon at MCRD, San Diego, which is a living hell. Add all that to everything else and I'm a very lucky guy to be sitting here typing this out now.

I feel your pain.
I broke a hip in a backcountry ski accident two years ago. I actually didn't think it was broken as I was (painfully!) mobile and was able to get back to my car and to the hospital. Suprise, suprise, the hip was fractured and required three screws. No more skiing that year but I was back at it the next season. My only advice would be to walk as much as possible, and work on strengthening the bad leg. It took about a year to get full strength and balance back. Good luck |

My advice: 1. Take your meds. 2. Eat enough to keep your meds down. 3. Do not fight your fatigue; give in and sleep as often as possible (in my crazy mind, sleeping holds 5x healing power compared to awake). 4. Hydrate. 5. Pump those ankles. Blood clots are no joke. 6. Celebrate the small wins as you recover and be patient. Trust the process and rest. Best wishes for your healthy recovery!

We're just saving him the step of having to ask his MD (who would obviously tell him to crowdsource it in internet watch forums). Besides, I've been off my pain meds for nearly a week now, so my internet stranger medical advice confidence is currently off the charts. Striking while the iron's hot!

I feel like I am in good company here.
Thanks for the get well wishes. If you have been in this situation, then you know it can be a bit depressing. You guys have been great with some cheerful good advice. The Rolex forum is a good bunch. |

I’m sorry to hear about your crash. I hope you heal quickly. I crashed skiing three years ago and shattered my left clavicle. I also broke seven ribs. Surgery wasn’t an option because of the number of clavicle fragments. I wish they could have repaired it, as my shoulder is deformed and occasionally painful. As soon as I was able, I started to lift weights and build strength. I ski, mountain bike and do any activities I wish now. When possible, do your PT and rehab, and you’ll be good to go in months.

I know a 97 yr old that had both her hips done at 93. She was up moving around without a walker after about a week and a half.
Good luck and hope you bounce back to good health quickly!! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Actually mine was on a bicycle as well. I had a intertrocanteric (sp?) hip fracture. And needed a intertrocanteric hip nailing done. In summary, 2 big screws, one down my femur and one in the head of hip. I'm not going to sugar coat this, it sucked. period. Surgeons all said I'd be "100%." Fun fact about 100% is that medically 100% is different than my 100%. For a frame of reference I used to compete in cycling and be very active. Life has changed. I can still bike, but I definitely cannot sprint like I used to. For my recovery, I was 28 years old, it took about 2 months for me to be able to walk. Started with just a walker, then went to crutches then cane. I used a stationary bike each day 3 weeks after my crash. That helped with mobility. Then by mid-July I was cleared to ride again. This was by far the most difficult thing I have went through in my life, mentally, physically, everything. I felt utterly useless, it does get better though! |

you will heal up like nothing ever happened sooner then you think and you will be back out again doing what you enjoy.. When I was all banged up and in pain with terrible vertigo, I still got up early out of bed, tried to walk as much as possible, ate very extremely healthy food, tons of water and always seen the glass 2/3rds full..! Best to yah young man..
