I walked away from Panerai long ago, fortunately. They seem to have lost their way much more since then.

principally, this is no different than saying..
Italian design, Swiss engineering.... "American customers" ? not sure that's an appropriate type of comment. it's owned by a large corporate conglomerate; they will cater to the market that suits its shareholders the best, just as any company would.

To each their own

I personally think the brand is more innovative and exciting than Rolex at the moment. The new materials that they are building with are really interesting to me.

I'd tend to agree that their offerings are more "exciting" than what Rolex has been putting out lately. Panerai receives a lot of criticism for "re-issue" of limited editions. or changing the colors of a basic design that already existed. Yet when Rolex re-issues an update (3rd iteration) of the 50th anniversary sub, or re-issues oyster perpetuals with the Stella colored dials.. everything's fine, and people can't wait to get on the waitlist?

I have been a customer of both brands - and I'd say it's refreshing to be able to get what you want from Panerai, without any weird games involved. discussion on retail pricing aside..
