What’s the deal with leather straps on Panerai

I’m considering getting my first Panerai so please excuse the ignorant question. As the majority of models would be considered “dive” watches (300m water resistance etc) why do they nearly all come on leather straps from the manufacture? Wouldn’t rubber or sail cloth be more appropriate, or is it more a function of tradition?

Panerai with a leather strap is so iconic that for me a Panerai without it looses its identity (to an extent obviously ). Usually they come with a second rubber strap that you can swap if you want to do some water related activities.

But they are Panerai that come with metal bracelets available and there is nothing wrong with that and again you can swap the bracelet for a strap so you desire.

Is personal really, but yeah the image of a Panerai is so sinked in my brain that if I see it with a bracelet, I have to say to myself : aaah it is a Panerai it just happen to be in bracelet.

Rubber straps are usually the way they come in the case of a Panerai Submersible, that’s diver version of Panerai. Which you obviously if desired you can swap to leather strap.

Actually the change of straps is where the beauty of Panerai comes , every time you do so you have a new watch

Enjoy

Panerai considers some of their leather straps to be water proof. They say something about it on their homepage, like "can be cleaned in water".

In real life, I have no idea. I would like to hear peoples experiences about that. I use rubber straps on mine.

think the majority of the ones that are shown on the site with a leather strap also come with a rubber strap, for optionality.

Good quality leather can get wet. And way back when, people stressed less about that.

Exactly. Plus we all know you 'need' at least six bands for your Panerai. Am up to 12 here, maybe more as I kinda lost count thoug at least seven are leather

I can fully relate to your question.

I bought the pam1058, which comes on ss bracelet, adapted one of my existing OEM rubber straps to fit but much prefer to wear this particular model on a blue alligator strap, I knew going in I would always prefer this on the gator strap.

I obviously have the option to change out straps, but rarely do.

As already mentioned most Panerais come with a second strap.

As a rule of thumb all Panerais with wired lugs usually don´t have a rubber strap included others do.

I prefer bracelets over any other kind of strap and always try to get a bracelet when available. I am a big Panerai Fan but I really don´t like their bracelet designs, Panerais are the only watches I wear with leather or rubber strap even when a bracelet is available.

Thanks for the replies everyone! I didn’t know any models came with more than one strap. Leather seems like a bit of tradition with aesthetics mixed in.

I can only speak for myself, but I prefer the look and feel of the OEM leather over rubber.

Luckily with Panerai, changing straps is easy and part of the fun of ownership

I go boating, skiing, and swimming with my leather strap Pam on a weekly basis in the summer! Strap is still in excellent condition and looks awesome! I personally think the PAM straps are the best OEM straps in the watch business!

I’d love to see Pictures of the leather after all that water. I’m concerned about mine for all these reasons. Just love it.

Submersible line is really the only true dive watches in the lineup and they generally come with cloth and rubber straps now.

I've heard it's the case that Hirsch supplies most of the Panerai OEM straps

Weren't the original Panerai's used by the Italian navy worn on leather straps?

Yes and my 6152-1 had the original strap which was a monster! Big thick leather strap worn over a wetsuit. Half the fun of owning Panerai are the custom straps!
