Buying Preowned Watches.....

My question is do you look for a preowned watch only a few years old or do you not care? Just want some comments . I made my descion about what Patek i want and i know where i’m going to get it from. but i want it to be 2-3 years old. didn’t know if anyone else cared?

Obviously the newer the better, and there is practically no difference in price between a 2-3 years old watch and one months old in the same condition. The advantage of the younger one is that you don't have to service it so soon.

A couple things to consider when getting a Preowned.

1) Date of the last service. Many preowned dealers will offer a 1 year in house warranty on the movement, but something to consider if its last service is close to 10 years. You may want to factor in that potential cost to your purchase price.

2) For myself, I prefer to buy a preowned a couple years into that particular generation. Somewhat like cars, I figure a couple years in they worked out any initial kinks.

With that said, I generally prefer to purchase a late model pre-owned still under the original manufacturer warranty unless it just came back from a factory service.

I gotcha. yeah the grey who has the 5167a patek i want only has a 2014 and that’s to old for me. not like i need a current year but 209/2018 would be good. still a bit away from purchasing but just doing my homework.

Newer the better but ok with an older piece with proper service history and in good running order.

Almost every watch I've ever bought is pre-owned which add up to around maybe 40.

Some watches models are only available in a few year period and if you want that model then you just look for ones in the best possible condition. When you buy used you have to mentally factor in the fact you may need to service it although I have only had that happen twice, one a disaster that worked out wonderfully and the other I just bit the bullet and had it done, twice.

I bought most of my watches used from ebay, Chrono 24, and forums and never had a problem with fraud etc and a few from online sellers which is usually more expensive BUT they usually have a warranty which gives some piece of mind. And the fact that they probably won't be selling fakes which is a big thing.

All that being said, I don't own precious metal watches, and most of my watches were bought for under 7 thousand and in fact usually 3-5 thousand. My theory on all this is, if I can't afford to lose the money entirely, don't do the deal, instead buy new from an AD or people like WatchBox. But I've had pretty good luck with my method.

I prefer new from AD. But if I’m buying preowned I want it to be as new as possible. This is relative for current production watches of course. I have bought a few used over the year from friends and that helps a bit because I know the history of the watch.

Find someone local, who deals in used watches, has a good reputation, and who provides solid warranties for his products.

That model has worked for me.

I purchase preowned when I know the source, its a watch I've been looking for, or a deal too good to pass up.
