Poll: Question for the 6263 Daytona owners

Hi,

This is my first thread and as I've just put a deposit down on a 6263, I have a quick question for those that own one.

How often do you wear yours?

Like many, I'm in the camp that watches should be purchased to be worn and enjoyed, but I can imagine that many 6263 owners use it as their "special occasion" watch and use something else (i.e. Sub) as their every day watch.

So, if you own or have owned a 6263, how often do you wear it?

See poll above.

A plain and simple fact when watches like the 6263 was around back in the 1970/80s Rolex could not give them away very very poor sellers. As back then most wanted automatic watches,my Father took on two jobs and saved for 5 years to buy his first Rolex but he wanted a Submariner. So off he went to the AD to buy his Sub,but AD offered him a 6263 and at this time the 6263 was cheaper than the Sub.Plus they gave him a discount on the 6263 with the money he saved by buying the 6263 and the discount he bought my mother a new watching machine.Sadly my Father died at a very early age just 55 years old, working in the coal mines and being a sailor on aircraft carriers in WW2 without doubt shortened his life. Now the watch belongs to me and would never sell it at any price, when I look at the 6263 on my wrist it reminds be of my Father and how proud he was with his Rolex watch.Sadly today to many Rolex are no longer watches bought to worn and enjoyed now to many just $$$£££ object things. And another simple fact today if it was not for the value of these watches now, many especially the newer type member would not give them a second look.

My second favorite Daytona! Congrats on obtaining yours!
When I had one, I wore it when I felt like it. But definitely more self conscious given its age and $$$ amount at the time.

Thank you!

I share that concern. I feel like I'll need to cover it in bubble wrap!

I owned two 6263 in the past, both were black dial. The last one I sold about 2 years ago after having it 13 years. I didn't wear it often, only sometimes when I felt like doing so. My daily was a Sub or a Zenith Daytona. The main reasons were that I didn't like the manual winding very much, and always wished the 37mm case was a little bigger. Other than that they are beautiful.

I own and wear my 6263 in rotation with all my other watches.
The only time I make sure not to wear it is if I was going to the beach / anything that involves swimming, or if it is a heavy rainy day.

It is nevertheless pressure tested, and otherwise gets equal wear in the rotation, no problems or restrictions!

Incredible!

When you say occasionally, do you mean once per month or 1-2 times per year?

Looking at the voting, I don't see anyone voting for "I wear it daily", which is interesting to me (but, completely understandable).

Bare in mind it's also unlikely someone has a 6263 as a one and only watch.
Many/most of us would not answer "I wear it daily" to any watch, because everything gets worn in rotation.
I wore my modern Daytona for 3 months straight at one point, but I don't consider that I wear it daily as I haven't strapped it on in a while now.

Hope that clears up the reason for my vote.

One or twice a year. This is the daily now:

Very cool!

I was thinking about using my No Date Sub as my daily, too.

I wonder how many actually own one? According the poll we have at least fifteen on the forum. Three say it's their daily!!!

I bought my 6263 back in early 2015 and wore it with great pleasure every now and then. Whenever I felt like it!

I normally don't mind scratches on my modern watches but with a vintage Rolex it was a different feeling for me...Not being an expert I was worried that I would not be able to source parts in case of damage etc.

Rising prices made it even worse at that time. That spoiled the fun for me and I sold it.

Never got back to vintage again...

Not a Daytona but my everyday watch is my 16618 solid yellow gold Submariner. Sure it's getting scratches and love marks but I can't imagine having it under glass only to be brought out for special occasions. Then again, my new GMT II BLRO is arriving Monday so the Sub may get benched for a bit.

Some very beautiful watches here

I find it a bit of a paradox. Owners of this and similar references love their watches. But the hype of today has dramatically inflated the prices.

That changes your mindset as mentioned above. Worry about destroying it’s value, finding it hard to insure and especially replace.

So I wonder, based on that; If owners have found themselves wearing it less for fear of damage, being stolen etc

These things are astronomical in price now. I’m not fickle about this usually but I’d worry wearing this out. And it is by far my fav ref.

6263 Daytona is such a gorgeous watch, no doubt about it, but is it really worth close to $100k?

6263 is a great watch and congrats to those of you that have one. I don't, probably never will based on the $ amount. But, I will say I have owned several other expensive watches and other overly expensive items, and I'm a believer of using them. So, if I had one, it would be in the rotation. So, at least 2/3 times a month. Just my .02 worth.

My 6263 has a similar history as Peters. Purchased by my dad in ‘70, at a discount, had always heard it was $235 out the door. He wore it daily till his passing in ’83 when I then received it. I wore it daily for the next plus 30 years. Then I found out about watch forums and that there were all kinds of cool watches out there. These days I have many watches but the 6263 still gets wrist time every week. Congratulations on your purchase.

Ps, throw it on some vintage leather every now and then. It’s very comfortable and it really irritates the purest out there.

Padi, that is a beautiful watch! I was on the hunt but missed one this week. I will end up with one, and I will wear it!

OP, I wear all my watches, regardless of vintage or value..

That’s the point. Rotate regularly and enjoy.

Congrats and enjoy yours when you get it.

I hope this isn't taking the thread too off course, but I'd love a few ideas for a quality strap option for my 6239?
