That happened to me every time when considering non-rolex watches. Some watches with beautiful design and playful complication that also are reasonable priced may look like an instant buy. But I can't stop thinking that kind of money could get me a robust OP which I would never grow tired of wearing. However just like the wise words from the contributors in the post, we never know what our tastes might become as watch collecting is a journey and the road ahead is long.

If you like a watch from another brand, by all means, you should consider branching out. For me, personally, for whatever reason, there are very few specific watches in other brands that excite me. I have to push myself to like Patek, for example, since everyone and their grand mother says Patek is great, Patek is fantastic, etc. etc., but honestly, deep inside, I don't like them enough to even consider (never mind not being able to pay for them).

There is a CH Premier Jewelers store locally here in the Bay Area, and they have almost all brands (except Rolex). I have been to their store many times and have seen a good selection of (Patek, Omega, GP, Hublot, Chopard, JLC, Breguete, Frank Muller, Panerai, Tag, etc. etc.), but honestly, there are only two Omegas that excite me (Planet Ocean, GSOTM), a couple of Panerais (blue dial), and almost all of the ALS which is way out of my price range at this time.

I mean, I feel bad when I walk out of that place thinking I should be in love with half of those luxury brands that I just saw in there, or at least 10% of them... but nope, not me. I would gladly pick a blue dial DJ41 over that Panerai, or a Milgaus over that Omega... you get the point.

I get more excited about a good number of low to mid-range watches (say $200 to $1500 range) than I get about a majority of higher end non-rolex watches ($5k+). Go figure.

I see you’ve decided to keep with the waiting list for the Rolexes, and I’m glad you identified the best path for you.

I used to be Rolex/Tudor only, but I’ve diversified somewhat - I generally like tool watches that can get knocked about, and I’ve branched out into Seiko, Omega, Panerai, and also, into a few pieces from Grand Seiko over the last few years. I’m glad I’ve done so for my own edification and to each their own.

My move away from Rolex has more to do with the fact I’ve got my bases covered in terms of my interests (Sea-Dwellers, green sub, explorer, Daytona, GMT, DD) than it does with lack of availability...but the lack of availability isn’t alluring to me at all.

Glad you made a decision, OP. IMO, I think you chose a good course, for what it matters.

I made a few decisions that solidified my taste in my own mind. Being impatient and impulsive cost me a bit.

Many people always said that there are so many brands that higher horology than rolex such as pp, ap, als.., but their prices are a lot higher too. I think rolex is still one of the best for money.

I am also a Rolex lover, but if I run into Omega snoopy on a platter, I won't hesitate to pull the trigger.
