This OP wasn't written well but he didn't really understand how the market works.

You don't tell a vendor that they will price match, they will tell you. So by saying I will check with your competitor then tell you what they offer for you to meet or beat, it was insulting. Also, he has no way of knowing if what you tell him was truthful. You could make up a number. So it's pointless to even bring it up.

Their job is to set a price, and your job is to make an offer. Vendors don't care about other vendors or how good of a deal you've gotten or haven't gotten anywhere else.
