Like who would win in a fight? I’m guessing the humans because they can move.

All the people who want one vs all who would/could actually by one.

"Wanters" would win by sheer numbers

Probably haven’t seen the question or answer since nobody knows what you’re asking/saying...

Well if I understood your question correctly then the people obviously won. Hence the price hike and shortage

I have always wondered this as well. The only thing i could think of is that a large percentage of people who purchased Subs from lets say 1980-2010 havent sold their watches limiting the quantity on the open market.

Impossible to answer. Even Economics cannot answer. Consider: Price Elasticity of Demand = % Change in Quantity Demanded / % Change in Price.
Rolex (and certain other luxury goods) defies this model because prices keep rising which only serves to increase demand and perceived exclusivity.

Do you mean that if ALL the people who want a sub (and this must include current owners) put out their hands and into each would receive a sub. Would ALL the subs produced to date satisfy the demand?

Wonky maths but let’s say Rolex produced 50k subs a year since 1953.

50,000 x 68 = 3.4million

So, do 3.4 million people in the world really want a sub.

As someone said earlier, this is wonky math. But considering that in 2019

- China produce 644.3 million watches (obviously most of them super cheap quartz watches)
- Hong Kong produced 197.8 million watches (the website apparently still differentiates the two geographies, but this is not the place for politics)
- Switzerland produces 20.6 million watches
- Germany makes 16.9 million watches
- United States makes 11.3 million watches

Source: https://www.statista.com/statistics/...mber-of-units/

Assuming that is true, then yearly watch demand is really high.

Now, most of that is for very cheap, throwaway quartz models and cheap digital (not Apple or Samsung) wrist computers (Applewatches and their ilk evolved a long time ago to where they are not watches).

So, let’s use Swiss production numbers. And even then, let’s assume the 20.6 million made many of those are less expensive watches. Let’s assume only a quarter of that number counts (meaning 5.15 million watches).

Not, let’s assume that for the past 68 years Rolex had been making 50,000 Submariners (a very high estimation considering they were not making ‘a million watches a year’ for several decades and have thus not been consistently making 50,000 Submariners a year ...all of this is just speculation that is most likely hilariously wrong to someone who actually works at Rolex)

That is 3.4 million Submariners out there.

That is less than the 5.15 million estimate above.

Even if you assumed Rolex started making 100,000 Submariners, from year one in 1953, that would be 6.8 million watches in existence.

And that is why there is big demand. Sure, there is hype involved, but there is also a very real overhang of demand to available supply.

Which is why Rolex as a brand is in great demand even though it is the largest Swiss manufacturer of watches, with ~25% market share, and even then it is difficult to find an OP in a case.

I think I’m going to start avoiding any thread re: Submariner. Too bad because it’s my favorite watch...

..Some interesting answers, thanks guys (those who understood the question)..
Yes, not very well executed and pretty impossible to answer correctly, but my query was what were the numbers between all the actual Submariners ever produced (all models) and what were the numbers of people in the world who want one..
I for one, discovered Rolex sport watches leafing through 1970s National Geographic magazines and around the same time, Sean Connery James Bond movies.. I have wanted a Rolex since I was 11..It took me another 29 years to get one.. A ref 1500.. A few more years later to get a Sub..And have had many different references.. 5513, 14060M, 16800, 168000, 16610, 16610LV, 16613, 116610, 116610LV..
My point is.. Nothing really.. Just a post on a forum from a massive fan of the Rolex Submariner..

No way did HK produce 197.8m watches in 2019. HK Registered businesses sold 197.8m watches maybe but defn not production. HK only has a handfull of Micro brands and defn no major watch manufacturing.

*I read closely the website and it says EXPORTED not manfucatured.
