I think part of the issue is how similar an Explorer is to "dressier" options already. Unlike subs, GMTs, etc which were more purpose engineered and distinctively styled, an Explorer started out as simply a "dressed down" version of an Oyster Perpetual. Different hands and dial layout for presumably better legibility in adverse conditions, a little less polish, etc. So the answer to someone who wanted a "dressier" Explorer for non-harsh conditions seemed logical- get an OP (or DJ).

You are crazy!

A fool and his money are soon parted. I don’t see anything but a dainty baby showy trouncing of heritage. A shame.

I think the issue that most of us have with it is ideological. It's as good looking as any two-tone 36mm Rolex, but it has always been a hard-core sports/exploration watch made in SS only. Adding gold kind of shoves the reality in our faces that these are no longer tool watches, they are now jewelry.
This

I am NOT attracted by TT normally and found this watch handsome in its own right. I believe most flame comes from "principles", because it breaks tradition of ruggedness. And some prefer to keep the wool over their eyes and deny Rolex are (ALSO) male jewellery today...
