Got an unexpected call

Long time lurker...first time poster. While buying a piece of jewelry for my wife last month I mentioned to my salesman that if he comes across either an oyster perpetual or datejust with a blue dial in the next year or two that’s not accounted for I may be interested depending on timing. He laughed as their case was empty but said he would keep his eye out. Fast forward 4 weeks and he calls me up and says he has a datejust blue dial with oyster bracelet that’s available if I’m interested. I can’t go see until Wednesday so he’s holding it in the safe. My only concern is that I keep reading about what a scratch magnet the bracelet is? I’m fine with that but I’m assuming it’s possible to have the bracelet polished every few years or during a service? This would be my first Rolex.

IMHO just wear it - its not "a concern" as you put it. i have:

3 oysters PCL
3 oysters brushed
1 jubilee

I wear them all the same. Marks will be had regardless of what you do. after the first couple you won't care. its life. Sure you can have it polished but its just going to get that way again.

Watches are not meant to be pristine. otherwise stick it in a safe and admire from afar.

Yeah you’re right. Thanks. I’ll wear in good health. 👍

Perfectly said. enjoy it Unless you are buying to resale there's no reason to be concerned with marks or scratches.. gives it character

Perceived scarcity - You thought they were hard to get, so you are more appreciative and likely to buy when you are offered one.

When you are there, you’ll be convinced you just can’t pass up the opportunity.

If it is the model you want, go for it with no regret and wear in good health. I have a DJ on oyster with PCLs and yes, scratches do show up more on the PCLs than a brushed oyster, but it is not as bad as one would think if you’re getting the watch to wear. Now, if you’re getting the watch with the plan to resell, maybe that would be an issue, but that makes no sense for this watch. Best wishes

I've been wearing an oyster bracelet with PCLs on my YM for the most part of the past 6 years and it still looks fine. The fear of being a scratch magnet is vastly overblown if you wear it with reasonable caution. If you treat it like a beater, it will soon look like one.
