Opinions needed...

Following the release of the new Datejust 36 with palm motif dial, may I ask what would the general preference be for this watch in terms of combination: smooth bezel/oyster bracelet or fluted bezel/jubilee?

While waiting for my OP36 to be sized today, I kinda told my SA I would be keen to add one of those over the next few months but just could not make up my mind which combination to proceed with. I'm kinda fixated with the having the traditional Datejust look of fluted/jubilee but I am somewhat sceptical whether the palm motif would go well with the fluted/jubilee combination... because a part of me actually feels that the palm motif will do better with smooth/oyster...

For this dial config, fluted+jubilee makes it look crowded, I think it looks much better on smooth+oyster. Also the vibe of this is fun summer watch, dressy fluted+jubilee combination is not going with that vibe.

I am with you 100% on this one. From the start, I thought the palm motif dial looks best with smooth bezel and Oyster bracelet. For me, the fluted bezel and Jubilee make it much too 'busy' and partly takes away from the beautiful dial.

Oh well... looks like you guys have managed to convince me to overcome my obsession with fluted/jubilee for Datejust. Thanks!

Generally I say fluted/jubilee for a DJ but not with this dial. I'd go smooth/oyster

For the palm motif dial, I'd go smooth and oyster.

For me the Datejust is synonymous with fluted bezel and jubilee.

I know..... that’s why it’s such a struggle for time to decide. I don’t think the palm motif will fit well without the fluted/jubilee combination though. It’s simply too busy. But a Datejust without fluted/jubilee feels weird and my OCD is kicking in hard.

That watch is hideous looking I hope you’re not serious about buying. That and it’s 36mm...

I heard someone had called this new watch and dial the CBD!

I prefer the fluted/Jubilee combo...

HAHAHAHA I’m serious! All my 3 DJ are 36. My OP is 36. My first Rolex was a Date 34mm. I’m dead serious in getting the watch just can’t decide between the bezel and bracelet combination

Of course everything might change when I see in person, but I think it has a little combination of both the olive green dial of the DD40 and the PP TwentyFour. And I think it might be amazing!

Datejust has to be fluted in my opinion, bezel choice isn’t even a question.
On the bracelet side there is at least a decision to be made, jubilee always looks a little dated “old mans watch” to me so I prefer the younger and more modern oyster
Having said that I’d still seriously look at the DJ41, the 36mm really is tiny for a man!

41mm is not an option for me unfortunately... I was tempted to get the Wimbledon dial last year with the 41mm DJ simply because its not available on the DJ36 but after seeing it in person I did not like the dial and the size was not for me as the proportion feels off.

Definitely the Oyster over the Jubilee - Jubilee with this dial would be like wearing striped socks with a plaid suit. Fluted vs Smooth bezel though is a more difficult decision, but I feel like the smooth bezel keeps the attention on the dial and brings down the visual proportions a bit to make this a sportier watch. Post a pic when you get it!

Just for a laugh have a look at this, from The Timeless Watch Channel, my favourite YouTube channel. The bit about the palm motif OP starts at around 2:50!

The dial is more casual than formal, so I think that the smooth bezel/oyster bracelet combo is best.

I also say smooth/Oyster - also, to naysayers of the 36mm...36-38 was considered a 'jumbo' size men's watch for decades - maybe I just wear too much vintage, but if you want a DJ, to me it has to be a 36 - just IMHO.

Thank you very much for the opinion! Most likely I will request for the smooth/oyster combination. Deep down inside I know it’s the better combination but I was just stubborn with having fluted/jubilee for Datejust haha hence seeking opinion. Cheers!

Smooth bezel/Oyster; otherwise dial looks too busy and too formal.

Any DJ needs a fluted bezel and jubilee including this one

I think it depends on how much you want the dial to stand out. I like it on the oyster and smooth bezel.

Usually I’m in the camp of Datejust = fluted + jubilee. No questions asked.
But with this palm motif dial I kinda feel that it’s gonna be too cluttered.
That’s why I’m so torn between both options but likely smooth/oyster for this one because ultimately the star of this watch is the dial.

How about smooth/jubilee or fluted/oyster? They would tone down how busy it looks, but not all the way.
