Until you acquire a watch that you love you so much you would never sell, all watches are placeholders. Especially with individuals who keep a small collection.

I think my Explorer 1 out all of my watches is close to that level.

If buying a mere placeholder, then you are just throwing away money. Learned that mistake when I was a wee lad new to collecting. Now I just get what I want and don't fiddle around with anything else.

Placeholder watches

This is not to demean the placeholder watch in any way. I enjoy the Tudors very much and if I never get a Pepsi or Daytona, wont be an issue.

I got a BLRO (Pepsi) while waiting for my Blue SkyDweller (which was at RSC for repair).

I got my wife a WG Daytona while waiting for a SS for her.

I got myself a TT SkyDweller while waiting for a Full Gold SkyDweller.

I got myself a YG DD40 while waiting for a platinum DD40.

See I'm not a big Omega fan so thanks for sharing this. I never knew this even existed but this to me is a better looking placeholder to the SS Daytona than the Tudor Chrono. It even came out way before the Daytona (and arguably looks better) so I'm not even sure it is a placeholder, probably not.

But when comparing to the Tudor Chrono Panda, it blows it out the water with clean hands, small hour markers, no rivet bracelet and not a pair of beatty looking two eyes staring at me.

I love that Omega! It's just way too big for my wrist.

I have not had good luck settling. Best to wait for what you really want.

Good advice right there.

I've done the placeholder thing myself in the past, and ultimately it's just a waste of money as a placeholder never scratches the itch.

I have two instances where I picked up a "placeholder" watch.

I picked up a BB58 in October of 2018 when I couldn't find a 114060. I loved everything about it except for all the gilt coloring. As luck would have it, I was walking around downtown Boston in December of 2018 and walked by an AD that had a 114060 sitting in the window, I kid you not. Anyway, the BB58 was sold the next day. After spending a few months with the 114060, I missed the dimensions of the BB58 on my 6.5" wrist but I was still in love with the sub and felt I had made the correct decision.

Fast forward to a few weeks ago when I just snagged a BB58 blue. To me, this watch is perfect (sans the bracelet). I still have the 114060 and I will probably keep it just because I may never be able to get another one but the BB58 is getting most of my diver wrist time.

Another time I purchased a "placeholder" was when I got my 116053 (black dial) Daytona. I've been on a wait list for a SS Daytona (either dial variant) for what will be 3 years in June and I've basically given up hope. I have two major milestones this year and I wanted a Daytona. I refuse to pay gray market prices so my options were slim. I saw the two tone Daytona last year at my AD and I almost pulled the trigger but I wasn't sure if I could pull off two tone. When my AD offered me one last week, I grabbed it.

So far, I REALLY like it. The size is perfect and it's super comfortable. It is definitely the classiest watch I own and it makes me want to dress nicer than usual, even when I'm WFH. While it may not be my first pick in the current Daytona lineup, it's WAY cheaper than a gray market SS Daytona or a PM Daytona. Plus, it's changed my views on TT and PM watches, I think I CAN pull them off.

My first Rolex was a TT YM, and the second was the 116503. I didn’t learn about all the hype until AFTER I purchased the 116503 (I didn’t realize how lucky I was).

What’s funny is that I was about to buy a TT RG DJ (but was hesitant) when my SA saw the 116503 “coffin” on the in house jeweler’s table. She snagged it and brought it to me and said “what do you think about this one?”

I said “That’s my favorite!” I had looked through the entire catalogue online, ignoring prices and just looking at aesthetics. That was the top of my list with about a tie with the BLNR.

So I totally understand where you’re coming from here. The proportions are great and it’s extremely comfortable. I didn’t dislike the all gold or the stainless, but I just liked the TT. I don’t get all the hate, but that’s because it appeals to me.
