"Your wrist is used to the feel of gold"

I spent some time at an AD today looking into trading in a 20 year old two tone Datejust for a new colored Oyster Perpetual.
Just feeling it out.
The clerk was trying to steer me into trading up to a new Datejust and used the line "Your wrist is used to the feel of gold" in trying to talk me out of the Oyster Perpetual.
I kept my composure but had to stifle a chuckle-they don't have the watch anyway.
Never heard of this-sounds like total bullcrap.
But...is there anything to it? The two tone Jubilee bracelet is mostly stainless anyway!

modern pm rolexes are a lot heavier and can make steel watches feel cheap after. in your case i think he was just trying to get you to buy something more expensive though ...

Fact: salesman have only one goal, to sell you something. And to reach this goal, will tell you whatever they think is needed.

Exemples: I had a woman tell me “we would be proud if someone like you were to wear our watch” or “buying this watch, you might meet With our CEO. He wants to meet those who purchase these models”. Etc.

Only two things matter: can you afford the watch and do you like it. If it’s a double positive, go ahead. Let nobody tell you what is good or not.

I had an SA mention 5 year financing on a YG Skydweller. I wasn’t too pleased considering how young and clearly not financially capable. I just laughed it off but I continue to go there. She didn’t seem to be completely serious

Most likely they were trying to not only upsell but to sell you a watch they were more confident they could rapidly get ahold of and/or were going to be less likely to make a bundled sale with. The colored OPs are in extremely high demand and some colors are selling for as much as 3 times their MSRP. An AD is most likely going to want to net more than what they get from just the MSRP of the watch alone on a high-demand piece as such.

My favorite (from department store sales associates) “Those jeans look amazing on you! They won’t shrink in the wash!”

That being said, you do get used to a certain weight on the wrist. A few years back I checked out a Cartier wristwatch for a friend; even comparing Cartier SS to Rolex SS, the Rolex was much heftier and solid. If PM is heavier you will notice a change to SS. The Rolex SA may have heard customers say that when they go from a PM watch to a SS watch they’ve noticed it weighs less.

In another context, I’ve noticed the Mercedes door has a considerable heft and solidness to it that other car doors don’t have, whether it’s the C class or the S. Our family has had numerous MBZ since the early 1970s, so I’m familiar with many models over several decades, and to me it’s noticeable. It doesn’t mean that other cars aren’t as good or as safe (we have 2 other cars that are more expensive than my MBZ but don’t have the heft), but, to me, it is noticeable, and I’ve mentioned this to a MBZ SA. If the MBZ SA told people that customers do get used to the weight of the doors, that wouldn’t be inaccurate.

They were probably saying “Would you like fries with that?” a few years earlier. It’s retail sales. Nuff said.

Rolex also likes to play the same used car sales tricks.

Don’t listen to a word. Sales advisers always win. Cars, property, Jewellery. Doesn’t matter. They always win.

And I’ve heard some whoppers in my time but... just no. In 50 years, what is rarer? A 70 year old datejust or a 50 year old candy coloured OP? Do you need the date? Do you like the OP more? Could you afford an OP in isolation? Save up? Sell the DJ privately?

Sales people are like a honey trap to a 17 stone business man in a Hong Kong hotel. If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck then it’s 99 per cent a duck in my opinion.

Sorry for ranting. Makes me so mad!

It's crazy. I somehow become more handsome, smart, funny and cool
the minute a salesperson tries to sell me something expensive!

But yes, you do get used to the weight of a PM watch and the SS models do feel much lighter and almost flimsy--even though they are not.

Thanks for the chuckle. I wish had had the attitude to pull off saying something like this every once in a while, particularly these past few years at most ADs.

Well, after having bought, for a truly obscene gray market premium, the watch I wanted I can honestly say the SS with Oyster bracelet feels BETTER than the 2 tone Jubilee.
Some of that no doubt is the 41 size versus 36 on the datejust.

I’ve been mainly wearing a white gold Rolex for about ten years; it does feel heavier, because it is heavier. However, a lot of this is purely in the mind. It’s a form of jewellery really, but nice. Not keen on two-tone, either gold or steel ....not both.

I love the feel of the full pm pieces, so there is something to that. I don't feel it applies to the TT pieces. My TT sub doesn't feel much different from my Hulk.
